January 2016 Dividend Income UpdateLearn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.

Welcome to my first dividend income update for 2016.  For those of you new to these posts on my site, every month I discuss my approach to investing using Canadian dividend paying stocks and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs), and how reinvesting the dividends and distributions paid from these Canadian holdings are helping us reach financial freedom.
Looking back…
It’s easy to be pleased with the progress we’ve made over the last few years, getting our financial act together, largely thanks to a good (an improved) savings rate:

Prior to 2008, I wasn’t focused on dividends or ETFs or much of anything related to our portfolio.  The Great Recession was definitely a rude wake-up call and time to re-evaluate things.  I started this blog in earnest early in 2010 and I’ve been using it ever since to chronicle our saving and investing ways to financial freedom.

In 2010 we began the transition out of (costly) big bank mutual funds and into lower-cost, Exchange Traded Funds…

TORONTO – Premier Kathleen Wynne says jobs and the economy are her top priorities when the Ontario legislature resumes sitting Tuesday, but the opposition parties say the Liberals are on the wrong track for both.
Wynne says Ontario’s diversified economy is now leading Canada in foreign direct investment and in economic growth, and promises the upcoming budget will look at ways to keep the province on top.
“You will see in our budget that our focus is on how we can work across the province to make decisions that will allow for growth in communities and to work with businesses to allow us to continue to lead the country,” she said last week.
The budget is also expected to include details on more liberalized wine sales, following last year’s move to allow some grocery stores to sell six packs of beer, and will firm up the Liberal plan to eliminate the $7.5 billion deficit in just two years, as promised.
The government would not comment on reports the budget could be introduced as early as Feb…

OTTAWA – The federal banking regulator says it is taking permanent control of the assets of the Canadian branch of German-based Maple Bank GmbH.
The Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions is also asking the Attorney General of Canada to apply for a winding-up order with respect to these assets.
OSFI said last week that it was temporarily taking control of the assets of Maple Bank’s Canadian branch.
That was after a German regulator suspended the lender’s activities following investigations into certain trading activities during the 2006-2010 taxation years.
OSFI says an insolvency administrator was appointed in Germany last week to handle the winding up of Maple Bank GmbH.
Maple Bank’s main business at its Toronto branch was securitization, securities financing and structured secured wholesale lending.
Its deposits are not covered by Canada Deposit Insurance Corp. insurance.
