Alert! Seg funds are on the riseWatch out if your advisor suggests investing in segregated funds. These insurance-backed investment products come with high fees and are unsuitable for typical investors. But they’re now surging in sales—likely because they don’t fall under new fee disclosure rules for mutual funds, ETFs, bonds and stocks coming into effect this July.
“I can see this causing some investment firms to have a bias towards selling seg funds,” says Jason Heath, a fee-for-service Certified Financial Planner (CFP) at Objective Financial Partners Inc. in Toronto.
Data from analysis firm LIMRA bears this out: Gross seg fund sales in Canada are up 9% on a year-over-year basis to $2.49 billion as of Sept. 2015. SAN FRANCISCO – Google is shifting into reverse and leaving behind a service that compares auto insurance prices.
The planned March 23 closure of “Google Compare” comes a year after the Internet search engine expanded the service in the U.S. to allow consumers to get quotes from a variety of auto insurers.
The service currently lists prices from 28 insurers.
Google Compare also allowed consumers in the U.S. and U.K. to look for the best deals on credit cards and mortgages.
Google told participating auto insurers and lenders in a letter that the comparison service didn’t attract as much traffic as it anticipated.
The comparison service had spurred speculation that Google was laying the foundation to sell auto insurance itself, something that the Mountain View, California, company denied was in the works.
The post Google reverses course with closure of car insurance service appeared first on Canadian Business – Your Source For Business News.

Then, they’re either grateful for the protection the plan provides, or disappointed to find that their expenses aren’t covered. The trick, however, is to know where you stand beforehand – particularly if you’re contemplating a job search.
Although they vary sharply across companies, employee benefits are designed to add value to your overall compensation package…
