China assures US no devaluation, pushing reforms forward
BEIJING (AP) — China’s premier told visiting U.S. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew on Monday that his government is pressing ahead with painful reforms to shrink bloated coal and steel industries and ruled out devaluing China’s currency.
Premier Li Keqiang’s comments were in line with a joint declaration by financial officials from the Group of 20 biggest rich and developing economies who met over the weekend in Shanghai. They pledged to avoid devaluations to boost sagging trade and urged governments to speed up reforms to boost slowing global growth.
Beijing is under pressure to reassure global financial markets it has its economy under control following stock and currency turmoil.

How to leave more assets to your heirs

Q: I’d like to give my children about $100,000 as a cash gift to get it out of my estate and away from the tax man. Is it possible?
—B & R, Kelowna, B.C.
A: Cash is king when it comes to passing a gift to your kids. “There will be no tax payable on the gift by either the donor or donee as Canada doesn’t have gift or estate tax,” says Grace Chow, a tax specialist at Cadesky and Associates in Toronto. However, if the gift is in the form of an asset, like a cottage, the asset will be deemed to be disposed at fair market value and you will owe tax on 50% of the appreciable gains. I wouldn’t call it a tax grab, but I think you might.

How to get millennials to start saving for retirement
– moneysense.ca
Irvin Ho, a 25-year-old business grad from Simon Fraser University, only recently started thinking about his financial goals. Two years ago, he put $10,000 in savings into a self-directed portfolio invested in index funds. Warming to the pastime, Ho, along with two friends, launched a website called Young Guys Finance that introduces the basic concepts of investing to their contemporaries via online video courses and boot camps at their alma mater.
Ho admits his own portfolio’s performance is “not so good right now.” But he’s convinced of the value of do-it-yourself investing and wants to help others do it too. “I tell myself, You don’t have to look at it every day. You’re doing it for the long run, so stop looking at it!”
Within his generation, Ho is something of an exception. Millennials have not-so-quietly become the largest cohort in the Canadian workforce, but for many of those born in the 1980s and ’90s, the cut-off to contribute to one’s RRSP passes at the end of February without much fanfare…
