Then and now: Justin Trudeau on deficit politics
– macleans.ca

Oh, how quickly fiscal projections from a late-summer campaign commitment can turn into dust. Last year, when Justin Trudeau pitched a few years of deficits and billions for a long-term infrastructure plan, he capped it off with a promise to balance the budget and 2019-20 and reduce the federal debt-to-GDP ration to 27 per cent.
The Liberal language was categorical. “We will run modest short-term deficits of less than $10 billion in each of the next two fiscal years to fund historic investments in infrastructure and our middle class. After the next two fiscal years, the deficit will decline and our investment plan will return Canada to a balanced budget in 2019.”
The party’s five-year plan for the debt-to-GDP ratio? “In every year of our plan, federal debt-to-GDP will continue to fall,” read the party platform, which included a handy bar chart that visualized it all…
Eldorado Gold swings to big Q4, yearly loss; cites massive impairment charge
– canadianbusiness.com
In the fourth-quarter, the Vancouver-based miner said the loss attributable to shareholders was $1.238 billion or $1.73 per share, as compared with a net profit of $13.9 million or two cents per share in the year-earlier quarter.
The adjusted loss was $19.3 million as compared with adjusted net earnings of $29.4 million in the 2014 period, the company said in a statement Wednesday after markets closed.
It said the main factors impacting earnings included an impairment charge net of taxes of almost $1.25 billion, along with lower gold sales volumes and prices.
For the year as a whole, the company recorded non-cash impairment charges totalling $1.049 billion in property, plant and equipment (net of deferred income tax recovery) along with $476 million in goodwill mainly related to Greece, where it has been in conflict with regulators…

Stocks slip, led by energy and materials companies
Falling prices for oil and other commodities pulled U.S. stocks modestly lower on Wednesday, nudging the Standard & Poor’s 500 index slightly into the red for the year and putting it on course to snap a five-week winning streak.
Energy and mining companies led the decline, while consumer staples and utilities stocks bucked the broader downward trend. Disappointing earnings from several companies, including Nike, also weighed on the market. Oil slumped 4 per cent.
Trading was muted ahead of Friday, when markets will be closed for the Good Friday holiday.

March is a good month to find deals on Japanese cars
DETROIT (AP) — If you’re in the market for a Japanese car, March is a good time to buy.
Unlike U.S., European and Korean automakers, which end their financial year on Dec. 31, Japanese companies such as Toyota Motor Corp. and Honda Motor Co. close their books on March 31. In order to hit their annual sales targets, Japanese automakers usually ramp up the promotions and deals in March…
