California pension fund CEO to be sentenced for bribery
– canadianbusiness.com
SAN FRANCISCO – Federal prosecutors want the former head of the nation’s largest public pension fund sent to prison for four years after he acknowledged accepting more than $200,000 in bribes and trying to steer investments to help an associate.
A judge on Tuesday in San Francisco was expected to sentence Federico Buenrostro, former chief executive of the California Public Employees’ Retirement System. He pleaded guilty to fraud and bribery charges two years ago, saying he started taking bribes around 2005 to try to get staff members to make investment decisions that helped Alfred Villalobos, an investment manager and former board member of the pension fund.
Buenrostro said he accepted cash, a trip around the world and allowed Villalobos to pay for his wedding in Lake Tahoe, California. Villalobos killed himself last year, weeks before he was set to go on trial. He had pleaded not guilty to fraud charges.
Buenrostro’s guilty plea came out of a yearslong investigation into the role of money-management firm middlemen, called placement agents, in helping clients win investment business from the pension fund…

US home prices rise in March as spring buying season begins
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – U.S. home prices kept climbing in March as the spring home buying season began, but so far the higher costs haven’t thwarted sales.
The Standard & Poor’s/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index increased 5.4 per cent in March compared with a year earlier, according to a report released Tuesday. That is the same annual gain as in February.
Solid job growth, modest increases in wages and salaries, and low mortgage rates are fueling Americans’ willingness to buy homes. Yet there is also a limited supply of homes on the market, which pushes up prices.
David Blitzer, chairman of the S&P index committee, said the number of homes on the market is equal to less than 2 per cent U.S. households, the lowest percentage since the mid-1980s.
The number of available homes fell 3.6 per cent in April, according to the National Association of Realtors.
“It remains a tough home buying season for buyers, with little inventory available among lower-priced homes,” Svenja Gudell, chief economist at real estate data firm Zillow…
