HALIFAX – Canada’s services sector is expected to play an increasingly important role in the growth of the country’s exports, a deputy governor of the Bank of Canada says.
“Canada’s resource sector is shrinking in economic importance as investment and employment shift toward the non-resource sector,” deputy governor Lawrence Schembri says in the text of a speech prepared for delivery in Halifax.
An advance copy of the speech was released in Ottawa.
The central bank’s estimates suggest commodity exports could fall from 50 per cent of the total in 2014 to roughly 40 per cent of total exports by 2020.
However, Schembri sees significant prospects for increased exports by the services sector.
“In particular, firms in the information technology service sector, which sells business solutions, software and entertainment services, are benefiting from strong foreign demand,” Schembri said.
He noted the service sector has been rising since 2000 while the share of manufactured goods in Canada’s exports has fallen…

Closing Trade ($FB, $NILE)

– IntelligentSpeculator.net

Closing Trade ($FB, $NILE)It is certainly fit that in what has been a tough year in terms of long & short tech stock trading, the one stock that has consistently been a good short finally ended up making me pay, and it was painful. Yesterday, as Blue Nile was in the news to release its quarterly earnings, it announced it had received and accepted an offer by a group led by Bain which was 33% over NILE’s stock value. No need to tell you that sent the stock way higher and crushed my FB-NILE trade:

As of today, that trade stands at -52.14% and will be closed on the opening today. As is always the case, you can see this year (and past years) long & short trades here:

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Hertz shares plunged more than 30 per cent in Tuesday trading and its rival, Avis, fell sharply after the company slashed its expectations for all of 2016 in what had already been a dismal year in the car rental business.
Both companies have wrestled with excess capacity in the market.
Hertz, which also owns Dollar and Thrifty, cited falling rental car volume and the diminishing values for the vehicles it owns.
Hertz said late Monday that it now expects earnings between 51 and 88 cents per share for the year, a fraction of its previous per-share forecasts between $2.75 and $3.50. Wall Street analysts had been projecting per-share earnings of $2.92 for the year, according to FactSet.
The company’s third-quarter earnings, also posted on Monday, were far below Wall Street expectations.
Hertz, based in Estero, Florida, said it plans to continue to cut costs to improve its finances.
Shares of Hertz Global Holdings Inc. fell $11.29 to $24.45 in afternoon trading. Shares of Avis Budget Group Inc…
