Japan revises upward growth estimate for Jan-Mar, to 1.9 pct
– canadianbusiness.com
TOKYO – Japan’s economy expanded at a 1.9 per cent annual pace in January-March, helped by sustained consumer demand, according to revised data issued Wednesday.
The government earlier estimated the world’s third-largest economy grew at annualized rate of 1.7 per cent. It said the improvement was mainly due to a better-than-expected level of corporate investment.
The quarterly rate of growth was raised to 0.5 per cent from 0.4 per cent.
The latest data showed private consumption, the biggest contributor to growth, rose 0.6 per cent in January-March, compared with an earlier estimate of 0.5 per cent.
Economists expect the economy to slow in the current quarter, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, facing a parliamentary election in July, judged the situation bleak enough to justify pushing back a planned April 2017 increase in the sales tax by two and a half years, to October 2019.
“While an improvement in business investment is positive for the economy, the strength of the Japanese yen and weak foreign demand may lead businesses to be more cautious about spending,” Bernard Aw of IG said in a commentary…

China’s trade contracts in May for another month
– canadianbusiness.com
BEIJING, China – China’s exports and imports contracted again in May in a sign of weak global and domestic demand.
Exports fell 4.1 per cent from a year earlier to $181.1 billion compared with April’s 1.8 per cent decline, customs data showed Wednesday. Imports shrank 0.4 per cent to $131.1 billion, an improvement over the previous month’s 10.9 per cent fall.
Trade weakness could complicate Beijing’s efforts to pull the world’s second-largest economy out of a slump. Weak exports could require more economic stimulus, setting back efforts to reduce reliance on trade and investment to drive growth.
“China’s export growth is likely to remain subdued going forward,” said Julian Evans-Pritchard of Capital Economics in a report. “While we don’t anticipate much more of a slowdown in global growth given that the worst is probably over for many emerging markets, we don’t foresee a significant pick-up either.”

Learn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
Over the years, I’ve learned to appreciate the beauty of simplicity. This principle can apply to every facet of your life, including personal finance and investing. Keeping it simple when it comes to investing can include making savings for investing purposes automatic (via preauthorized debit transactions) and keeping your portfolio as lazy as possible (using low-cost indexed funds). Although simple often works when it comes to investing, this doesn’t make it easy. There is some discipline involved to manage every investment portfolio. As my friend Andrew Hallam nicely puts it in in his popular book Millionaire Teacher, you need to collar your inner doppelganger to experience greater investing success.
Thanks to the financial technology (fintech) revolution, a new online financial advisor service is available to help you conquer that investment enemy in the mirror: ModernAdvisor. In the past, I profiled another online investment service on my site (Wealthsimple)…
