LONDON – A few months ago, London-based lawyer Yves Elbaz went rummaging through his papers for tax and banking documents and began drafting his application to Britain’s immigration authorities. With the country due to vote this Thursday on whether it should leave the European Union, the Canadian-French national wanted to make sure he could stay.
“I love the thought of living every day on an island, where the foundations of the English-speaking world started,” the 36-year-old says.
Like others who hold EU passports, Elbaz arrived in Britain without a visa and didn’t need to bother with one before he started his job. But that principle of free movement may have to be renegotiated or even abandoned in favour of a new visa regime if voters favour a British exit, or Brexit, from the 28-member bloc.
The estimated 3 million or so EU citizens living in Britain aren’t likely to be thrown out overnight, but they could be faced with new rules and new paperwork — potential restrictions that have made many anxious, according to immigration lawyer Colin Yeo…

So many things in this world of ours sound better in theory than they actually are in real life. Like $7.99 all-you-can-eat buffets, BeDazzlers and the latest X-Files reboot. There are also a number of things in the world of personal finance that sometimes turn out to be not quite as shiny as advertised. Case in point: credit card rewards programs.
Please don’t yell at me. I know, I know, Canadians love their reward programs with a passion normally reserved for hockey, poutine and their morning Timmies. What’s not to love? Money for nothing (and your chicks for free). Please hear me out.
No matter how you slice it, here’s the inescapable truth you need to know about credit card rewards programs. In order to collect the bounty, you have to use your credit card. And in order to reap a lot of rewards, you have to use your credit card a lot. For many folks, using their credit card a lot is in itself a bit of a problem.
There are basically two types of reward programs. First, there are the ones that dole out points or miles whenever the cardholder borrows with their card…

Set to roll out this summer, MasterCard Identity Check is a new smartphone app that swaps alphanumeric passwords for biometric authentication to let you complete credit card transactions using a selfie or fingerprint. So far, BMO is the only bank committed to making MasterCard Identity Check more widely available to the general public, but it’s quite likely more institutions will soon jump on the bandwagon. Biometric authentication is actually much safer than what’s currently being used, says John-Kurt Pliniussen, an eMarketing professor at Queen’s University.“I think the technology is here to stay.”
