Japan Cabinet OKs new stimulus package to pump up growth
– canadianbusiness.com
TOKYO – Japan’s Cabinet approved a fresh economic stimulus package on Tuesday worth more than 28 trillion yen ($275 billion), Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s latest effort to get the stalling recovery back on track.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga announced that the Cabinet endorsed the package Tuesday. It will be included in a supplementary budget for consideration by the parliament’s extraordinary session starting in September.
The package aims to raise Japan’s GDP by 1.3 per cent.
Abe said earlier Tuesday that the package was “an investment for the future.” It focuses on Japan’s agriculture and tourism, and on providing support for the child and elder care industry to enable more women to work full-time, as the labour force shrinks as the population ages.
Measures include improved wages for child and elder care workers and support for small-scale companies and low income families. The package also increases spending on infrastructure projects for tourism and for reconstruction of disaster zones, including parts of northeastern Japan devastated by an earthquake and tsunami in 2011 and this year’s fatal earthquakes in southern Japan…

Vancouver real estate tax sparks concerns for Toronto housing market
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Toronto’s red-hot real estate market could get even hotter as foreign nationals looking to dodge a new 15 per cent tax on properties in Vancouver seek new places to invest, realtors say.
The tax, which takes effect Tuesday, was introduced by the British Columbia government with the intent of improving home affordability in Metro Vancouver, where house prices are among the highest in North America.
But it has also given rise to concerns that it could exacerbate Toronto’s housing market.
“Where are those foreign investors going to go?” said Derek Ladouceur, a Toronto real estate agent.
“They’re not going to want to pay that 15 per cent, so they’re going to now dump it into the Toronto real estate market, which is already hot.”
Ladouceur predicts that all segments of Toronto’s housing market will get pricier, from condos to detached single-family homes, but the luxury segment — where many foreign investors park their money — could see the biggest lift…

Honda’s quarterly profit sinks 6 per cent amid quake damage
– canadianbusiness.com
TOKYO – Honda Motor Co. recorded a better-than-expected 174.6 billion yen profit ($1.7 billion) for the fiscal first quarter, as it gradually recovers from damage caused by a quake in southwestern Japan.
Analysts surveyed by FactSet had forecast at 133 billion yen ($1.3 billion) quarterly profit.
Honda said Tuesday that April-June profit fell 6 per cent from a year ago, when the Japanese automaker earned 186 billion yen. Earlier this year, Honda posted losses over a massive air-bag recall at its supplier Takata.
Takata uses ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to fill air bags. But the chemical can deteriorate and burn too fast, blowing apart a metal canister and spewing shrapnel. At least 11 people have died worldwide. Honda is among Takata’s biggest customers.
The quality-related expenses continue to weigh on results, Honda said.
A strong yen, which reduces the earnings of Japanese exporters like Honda, is also hurting its results. Honda said the dollar traded at about 108 yen in recent months, compared to 121 yen the same period a year ago…
