An unintended consequence of bitcoin’s rise has been the growing appeal of alternative coins. Investors squeezed out of bitcoin trade due to a swift and steep surge in its value are increasingly looking for a relatively inexpensive way to broaden or boost their crypto exposure.
Enter ethereum: the second most valuable virtual coin. Ether stepped out of bitcoin’s shadow and rose steadily over the last couple of years to the top of the heap of altcoins, a catch-all term for all cryptocurrencies other than bitcoin. Although worth a small fraction of bitcoin’s value, ether has clocked a staggering 980% jump in price over the past year, as of June 17, 2021. This compares to bitcoin’s 313% gain for the same period.
Not surprisingly, Canadians across the spectrum of age and investable assets are itching to hop on the ether rodeo, in the giddy hopes of bitcoin-like bounty. If that sounds like you, read on to understand ether’s features, functionality—and flaws—before you saddle up…

How to buy XRP in Canada

– moneysense.ca

Have you been considering whether XRP has a place in your investment portfolio? If the answer is no, or even, “What’s XRP?” there’s no need to feel like you’re out of the loop. The media spotlight on bitcoin has been so bright that it’s practically eclipsed even the shiniest of smaller coins, some of which are indeed at the top of the altcoin pyramid. One of these is XRP, a digital token created by U.S.-based Ripple Labs, a tech company founded in 2012 by Chris Larsen, Jed McCaleb and Arthur Britto.
Based on market capitalization, XRP was the third strongest cryptocurrency as recently as in 2020, behind only, but now sits at the sixth spot, just above dogecoin, with a market capitalization of nearly US$29 billion, as of July 9, 2021, per CoinMarketCap.
What is XRP (or is it Ripple)?
While the terms XRP and Ripple are often used interchangeably in both financial media and the cryptosphere, they are, in fact, different entities.
Ripple is a money transfer network that facilitates cheaper and faster cross-border payments…

Divorce is certainly not new—but what’s emerging as a trend is the choice to split later in life. Dubbed grey divorce, these marital splits, happening close to or in retirement, are reportedly on the rise, and they can have a significant financial impact.
Married couples are generally subject to a division of their property when they split up. The rules differ slightly depending on your province or territory of residence, but for couples who have been married for a long time or who accumulated most of their assets while together, a relatively equal division may result.
There can be other considerations, however, like spousal or child support. Couples who are close to retirement or already retired may not have child support obligations, assuming their children are independent adults. Spousal support could still apply but may not be as significant as with a younger couple if one or both parties are near the end of their career or no longer working.
In some provinces or territories, common-law couples are treated the same as married couples, but that isn’t always the case…

The dramatic rise and spectacular fall of bitcoin prices over the past few months grabbed front-page headlines across the world and touched off a social-media frenzy. Understandably, the crash rattled the crypto sphere. However, dyed-in-the-wool bitcoin bulls are quick to point out the volatility is not a bug but a feature of the world’s biggest and best-known cryptocurrency.
Bitcoin is arguably the most polarizing investment asset today. It has skeptics such as central banks and the larger global financial system in one camp, and high-profile cheerleaders including such tycoons as Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey and Mark Cuban in the other. Recently, some skeptics and fence-sitters—particularly the large U.S. financial institutions and payment processors—appear to be caving, with many jumping on the bitcoin bandwagon with various crypto considerations.
Even bitcoin’s recent swoon—cratering 50% from the year’s above-$64,000 high in April 2021—couldn’t dampen crypto enthusiasts’ optimism…
