Ethiopian Airlines CEO says Boeing credits Boeing 787 planes for contributing to profits

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Ethiopian Airlines’ chief executive officer says that the company has made a record profit he partly credited to Boeing’s problematic 787 planes.
Tewolde Gebremariam said this week the company’s operating profit between July 2012 and June 2013 is 2.7 billion birr ($143,137,098) from a billion birr ($53,013,740) the previous financial year.
Citing unaudited company accounts Tewolde said that the company’s net profits also surged during the period to 2.03 billion birr ($107,617,892) from 734 million birr ($39,230,167) of the previous year, a 178% increase.
Tewolde said the performance is a result of “exceptionally dedicated employees” and Boeing 787 planes he described as super-efficient. He said the planes helped the company save on fuel costs.
In January, Dreamliner’s around the world were grounded because of overheating lithium batteries.

Merkel presses for progress on financial regulation at G-20 summit, ahead of German elections

BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she’ll press for progress on financial regulation at next week’s summit of global economic powers, which comes ahead of Sept. 22 elections in which she’s seeking a third term.
Merkel said in her weekly video message Saturday: “Germany will, along with other countries, exert pressure so that we do not let up in the regulation of financial markets.”
She says there’s been progress in regulating banks but efforts to regulate so-called shadow banks such as hedge funds are stalled. Merkel wants the Group of 20, whose leaders meet in Russia next week, to produce “a binding timetable” on that and says she also expects progress on combating tax evasion.
Germany’s centre-left opposition argues too little has been done to tame perceived financial market excesses.
