WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama is seeking credit for an economic turnaround, using the fifth anniversary of the collapse of the Lehman Brothers investment bank to highlight signs of recovery and to warn against potentially market-rattling fights over the federal budget and the nation’s debt ceiling.
Obama was scheduled to address the state of the economy Monday in a Rose Garden speech, accompanied by a selection of Americans who the White House says have benefited from the administration’s policies. The event marks the start of a week-long focus on the economy after a month of preoccupation with the crisis in Syria.
For Obama, the anniversary of Lehman’s bankruptcy in 2008, which marked the beginning of the global financial crisis and played havoc with an economy already in recession, is an opportunity to confront public skepticism about his stewardship of the economy and to put down his marker for budget clashes with Congress in the weeks ahead.
The White House’s National Economic Council on Sunday issued a report detailing economic policies that it says have helped shore up the financial system and put the economy on a path toward growth…

BANGKOK – Asian stock markets rose Monday after economist Lawrence Summers withdrew as a candidate to head the Federal Reserve, a development that many investors believe will prolong the U.S. central bank’s monetary stimulus. The dollar fell.
Analysts said Summers was perceived as unenthusiastic about the Fed’s aggressive bond-buying program, dubbed quantitative easing, which helped push down interest rates to spur lending and jumpstart economic growth following the financial and economic crisis five years ago. The program has also weakened the dollar and boosted stock markets. Investors in equities want to see it continue for as long as possible.

His withdrawal means Fed vice chair Janet Yellen, a supporter of quantitative easing, “is firmly in pole position for running toward the top job,” said Stan Shamu, market analyst at IG in Melbourne, Australia…

TORONTO – Canadian specialty aviation company Discovery Air Inc. (TSX:DA.A) says its second-quarter profit rose by 3 per cent to $9.2 million from $8.9 million in the same period last year.
Basic earnings per share rose to $0.63 during the quarter from $0.61 in the second quarter of 2012.
Profit for the six months that ended on July 31, 2013, declined sharply to $435,000 from $10.3 million in the same period last year.
Earnings per share for the period dropped to $0.03 from $0.71 in 2012.
In the second quarter, the company had revenues of $72 million, a 3 per cent decrease from the comparative period last year.
For the six months, revenues were down 9 per cent to $115 million from $127 million in 2012.
The company blamed lower flight activity as well as lower forest fire management activity for the decline in revenues.
But it says an increase in training services and maintenance and overhaul activity partially offset the decrease.
