Dow average closes above 16,000 for the first time
NEW YORK (AP) — The Dow Jones industrial average closed above 16,000 for the first time Thursday as the blue-chip index races toward its best year in a decade.
The Dow has been on fire lately, propelled higher by a combination of solid corporate earnings, a steadily strengthening economy and easy-money policies from the Federal Reserve.
Since the start of the year, the Dow is up 22 per cent and has now topped three 1,000 point milestones in 10 months. It eclipsed 14,000 in February and 15,000 in May. If it holds onto its gains, it would notch its strongest performance since 2003.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Down 15 cents, or 0.84 per cent, at $17.79 on 18.80 million shares. The gold sector led decliners on the main index, falling 0.82 per cent to 162.59 points as the price of bullion on the New York Mercantile Exchange closed at US$1,243.60 per ounce, down $14.40.
MBAC Fertilizer Corp. (TSX:MBC). Fertilizer. Down four cents, or 2.58 per cent, at $1.51 on 7.86 million shares.
Whitecap Resources Inc. (TSX:WCP). Oil and gas. Up 64 cents, or 5.46 per cent, at $12.36 on 5.93 million shares. The company announced Wednesday that it will acquire a private company with operations in west-central Saskatchewan and boost its monthly dividend by eight per cent to 5.67 cents per share starting in the new year.

MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Canada Pension Plan Investment Board is selling three regional shopping centres in deals with a combined value of $500 million.
Real estate and property management company Morguard Investments Ltd. says it has agreed to buy the shopping centres — two in Ontario and one in British Columbia — on behalf of the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, commonly referred to as HOOPP, and Morguard Real Estate Investment Trust (TSX:MRT.UN).
The purchases are expected to close by Dec. 12.
HOOPP will acquire a 100 per cent freehold interest in two Ontario retail properties, Intercity Shopping Centre in Thunder Bay and the New Sudbury Shopping Centre in Sudbury
Morguard REIT will acquire a 100 per cent freehold interest in Pine Centre Mall in Prince George, B.C.
All three assets will be managed by Morguard, adding approximately 1.5 million square feet of retail space to the current managed portfolio bringing total assets under management to approximately $14.5 billion…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Total U.S. money market mutual fund assets fell $5.47 billion to $2.663 trillion for the week that ended Wednesday, according to the Investment Company Institute.
Assets in the nation’s retail money market mutual funds increased $270 million to $917.72 billion, the Washington-based mutual fund trade group said Thursday. Assets of taxable money market funds in the retail category rose $2.37 billion to $726.63 billion. Tax-exempt retail fund assets fell $2.09 billion to $191.09 billion.
Assets in institutional money market funds fell $5.75 billion to $1.745 trillion. Among institutional funds, taxable money market fund assets fell $8.58 billion to $1.672 trillion. Assets of tax-exempt funds rose $2.83 billion to $72.91 billion.
The seven-day average yield on money market mutual funds was unchanged at 0.01 per cent from the previous week, according to Money Fund Report, a service of iMoneyNet Inc. in Westborough, Mass. The 7-day compounded yield was flat at 0.01 per cent…
