$18M seized from owners of Massachusetts compounding pharmacy at centre of meningitis outbreak
– canadianbusiness.com
BOSTON – Authorities have seized over $18 million from the owners of a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy at the centre of a 2012 meningitis outbreak that killed 64 people nationwide.
U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz said the funds were seized from 13 different financial institutions as a result of seizure warrants unsealed Tuesday.
About $16.8 million was frozen in accounts connected to husband-and-wife Douglas and Carla Conigliaro of Dedham. Carla Conigliaro was a majority shareholder at the now-shuttered New England Compounding Center in Framingham.
The Conigliaros have been charged with transferring assets following the outbreak, which was traced to tainted steroid injections made by the company.
According to Ortiz’s office, the Conigliaros transferred millions of dollars the same month that their company surrendered its pharmacy license and shortly before the company petitioned for bankruptcy. They also allegedly transferred millions more after a bankruptcy court issued two orders prohibiting them from transferring any assets…

FAA grants first permits for use of drones to monitor crops, photograph real estate
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The Federal Aviation Administration on Tuesday issued permits to use drones to monitor crops and photograph properties for sale, marking the first time permission has been granted to companies involved agriculture and real estate.
The exemptions to the current ban on commercial drone flights were granted to Advanced Aviation Solutions in Spokane, Washington, for “crop scouting,” and to Douglas Trudeau of Tierra Antigua Realty in Tucson, Arizona.
Advanced Aviation Solutions plans to use its 1.5-pound, fixed-wing eBee drone to make photographic measurements of farm fields, determine the health of crops and look for pests. The aim is to save farmers time walking through fields. The drone also can carry sensors that pick up information invisible to the naked eye, which can help determine which fields need watering.
Trudeau’s exemption authorizes him to fly a Phantom 2 Vision+ quadcopter to “enhance academic community awareness and augment real estate listing videos,” the FAA said…

Asian stock markets snap 2 days of losses but growth worries temper gains
– canadianbusiness.com
SEOUL, South Korea – Asian stock markets snapped two days of declines Wednesday but gains were tempered by worries about the plunge in oil prices and renewed doubts about Greece’s membership of the euro currency bloc.
KEEPING SCORE: Tokyo’s Nikkei 225 added 0.5 per cent to 16,974.61 and Seoul’s Kospi edged up 0.2 per cent to 1,885.21. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng added 0.1 per cent to 23,509.91. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 0.2 per cent to 3,356.29 while Sydney’s S&P/ASX 200 shed 0.2 per cent to 5,351.90. Stocks in Taipei and Southeast Asia rose.
ANALYST’S TAKE: “With no major economic news due for a week in this region, Asia will blindly follow the US’s lead,” IG market strategist Evan Lucas said in a report. He said the oil sell-off, the strengthening of the U.S. dollar and the gross domestic product figures from China later this month would affect investor sentiment.
