Let’s be blunt, you can likely sum up personal finance into a few principles:
Pay yourself first.
Spend less than you make. You can add in “invest the difference” if you really want to.
The golden rule of personal finance is easy to understand but actually hard to implement consistently over many years for many reasons. Life throws some curves at you, things change and your financial plan needs to change with it. In general though if you can get a handle on investing that difference I mentioned above then you might be questioning how you should invest the difference. Based on my readings and experiences over the years I’ll provide a few more personal finance rules below; consider those rules in the silver and bronze variety after you follow the golden rule of paying yourself first.
1. Debt (general)

B.C. man alleging ‘false imprisonment’ in China to get day in Canadian court
– canadianbusiness.com
VANCOUVER – A British Columbia man has won the right to sue a company in a Canadian court that he alleges conspired with Chinese authorities to force him to spend years behind bars in China.
The B.C. Supreme Court rejected a bid by Silvercorp Metals Inc. (TSX:SVM) to have Kun Huang’s allegations of “false imprisonment” thrown out.
The Vancouver-based mining company had claimed in court that the case would be better dealt with in the Chinese justice system.
“The burden is on the defendant to establish that the alternative forum is the ‘clearly more appropriate forum,’” wrote Justice Carol Ross in her judgment released Tuesday.
“Silvercorp has not established that China is the clearly more appropriate forum.”
Court documents outlined how Huang worked at the time in China as a researcher for John Carnes of EOS Funds, a New York-based hedge fund manager.
In 2011, he contributed to a brief but damning report that highlighted discrepancies in Silvercorp’s financial and mining output reports to Canadian and Chinese authorities…

Alleging misrepresentations, education officials fine Corinthian subsidiary $30 million
– canadianbusiness.com
WASHINGTON – The Education Department says it will fine Heald College $30 million, alleging the Corinthian Colleges subsidiary engaged in egregious misconduct and misled students.
Corinthian, a massive for-profit educational institution, collapsed last summer amid a cash shortage and fraud allegations.
The department alleged that Heald, based in San Francisco, had shown a pattern of falsifying post-graduation employment data. In one instance, the department said, the company’s Honolulu campus declared that a graduate had found work in her chosen field of accounting — even though administrators knew she was working at Taco Bell. In other instances, the Education Department said, the company actually hired its own graduates for temp jobs in order to inflate its job placement rate.
Corinthian spokesman Joe Hixson said in an emailed statement that the government’s proposed penalty was a travesty that “further threatens Heald’s future by potentially imposing added financial and operational hurdles to prospective buyers…
