LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Living in an apartment? Expect your rent to go up again.
Renting has gotten increasingly expensive over the last five years. The average U.S. rent has climbed 14 per cent to $1,124 since 2010, according to commercial property tracker Reis Inc. That’s four percentage points faster than inflation, and more than double the rise in U.S. home prices over the same period.
Now, even with a surge in apartment construction, rents are projected to rise yet another 3.3 per cent this year, to an average $1,161, according to Reis. While that’s slower than last year’s 3.6 per cent increase, the broader upward trend isn’t going away.
“The only relief in sight is rents in the hottest markets are going to go up at a slower pace, but they’re still going to go up,” says Hessam Nadji, chief strategy officer at Marcus & Millichap, a commercial real estate services firm.
The main reason: More people than ever are apartment hunting.
Young people who have been living with their parents are increasingly finding jobs and moving out…

What’s that? A hint of sanity in Quebec over the Cirque sale?Artists of the Cirque du Soleil perform during the show “Quidam” at the Meo Arena pavilion in Lisbon, Portugal Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014. (Francisco Seco/AP)
Anyone who has watched a Cirque du Soleil show has marvelled at the way its performers appear to defy the laws of physics. But the Quebec government’s early response to the possible sale of the Cirque to a pair of U.S. and Chinese investment firms has to be regarded as a remarkable feat in its own right. Because in saying Thursday that his government would not intervene “in a private transaction,” Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard has pushed back against an inexorable force as powerful as gravity itself—the compulsion of Quebec politicians to stick their fussy noses into private business matters.
At this point, no deal has been signed. But the details floating around are quite precise, even if the final dollar figure has yet to be revealed. (Likely more than $1.5 billion, but certainly less than the $2 billion Cirque’s founder Guy Laliberté was hoping for when he hired Goldman Sachs last year to find a buyer…

Weekend Reading – Retiree portfolios, DSCs, debt, BCE, financial acts and moreLearn, save, invest and prosper by subscribing to My Own Advisor.
Welcome to another Weekend Reading edition friends.  I started putting this edition together last night and then abandoned it, just before the big #SensvsHabs game where I watched P.K. Subban take batting practice to Mark Stone’s hands.

I jumped off my couch when that happened – there should have been a suspension.  Hopefully Stone can play in Game #2 and the Sens can get some sort of payback for Subban’s antics including a win.
Back to the personal finance stuff folks, earlier this week I wrote about adopting Prosci’s ADKAR model for financial change and I recommended some rules to follow after the personal finance golden rule.
#GoSensGo and we’ll see you here again next week.  Enjoy the NHL playoffs hockey fans!
Here’s a very conservative ETF portfolio for retirees from Morningstar.  Equities make up just 20% using XIC and VUS.
