Finding a good financial adviser is the key to a good financial plan. (Photo caption by Martin Barraud/Getty Images)Last fall I bought a house, and wouldn’t you know it, I didn’t even make it through my first spring without the roof leaking. So I called a big-name Toronto roofing company and they sent out an estimator to have a look.
I liked the guy as soon as I answered the door—he was affable and Irish, with a bit of a twinkle in his eye. He did a very thorough inspection of my roof before putting together a detailed written quote.
He took me through it carefully, and answered all my questions knowledgeably. By the time we got to the end of it, I was thinking I wouldn’t bother to get any more quotes. But then he told me the cost, and I almost fell over. In a calm and steady voice, he informed me that getting my little row house’s roof redone would cost me $26,000. “Thanks,” I choked out. “But I think I might get a couple more quotes before deciding.”
I did get a few more quotes, and they all fell within the $5,000 to $7,000 range…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Anheuser-Busch InBev shareholders have approved Olivier Goudet as their next chairman.
Goudet, an independent board member, succeeds Kees Storm in the post. He will serve as chairman for four years.
Goudet is the CEO of JAB Holding Co, which has stakes in businesses such as cosmetics maker Coty Inc. and Peet’s Coffee & Tea Inc. He’s also served as chief financial officer at Mars Inc., according to a biography on the Anheuser-Busch InBev website.
Anheuser-Busch InBev’s brands include Budweiser, Bud Light, Corona and others. On Wednesday, Anheuser-Busch apologized for ad copy that appeared on bottles saying Bud Light removes the word “no” from drinkers’ vocabulary. There were widespread complaints about the slogan.
Shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev NV added 33 cents to $119.99 in Thursday morning trading.

Puerto Rico’s economy in limbo after legislators reject governor’s tax proposal
– canadianbusiness.com
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Legislators struck down a key part of a plan to overhaul the island’s tax system early Thursday, raising concerns about the U.S. territory’s economic future and its ability to pay off a heavy public debt.
Legislators voted 28-22 to reject Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla’s call for a 16 per cent value-added tax, and they failed to agree on an alternative way to raise revenues after some nine hours of debate that began Wednesday night.
Garcia issued a sharply worded statement accusing the island’s House of Representatives of being irresponsible and warning that economic development could stagnate.
“This action can bring negative consequences to the island’s financial stability, putting into danger the continuity of public services, the retirement system, debt payments and health services,” Garcia said.
House President Jaime Perello said he will take disciplinary measures against the six legislators of Garcia’s party who voted against the measure…

Imperial Oil’s Q1 profit falls 55% to $421 million due to lower oil prices
– canadianbusiness.com
CALGARY – Imperial Oil Ltd. (TSX:IMO) says its first-quarter net income was down 55 per cent from a year ago, dropping to $421 million as a result of the global decline in oil prices.
The Calgary-based oil and gas company said that it partially offset the effect of lower crude prices with higher production, which was up about 3,000 barrels per day from last year to the equivalent of 333,000 barrels per day.
Imperial’s share of production from the Kearl oilsands operation was 67,000 barrels, up significantly both from the year-earlier period when Imperial’s share was 50,000 barrels and the fourth quarter of 2014.
Production at its older Cold Lake oilsands operation also increased to 152,000 barrels of bitumen per day, up from 147,000.
Even still, Imperial’s earnings dropped to 50 cents per share from $1.11 per share or $946 million in last year’s first quarter.
