The words you need to know during this stock market downturn(Frank Gunn/CP)
It’s been a miserable start to 2016 for the world’s stock markets. Panicked investors have sold their shares en masse for several weeks, sending some of the most closely watched major indexes, including the S&P/TSX Composite Index, deep into the red. The sell-off has raised questions about whether this is merely a temporary phenomenon or something m0re sinister, with market-watchers throwing around terms like “correction,” “crash” and “cyclical bear.” For those struggling with the terminology, and the relative levels of concern they imply, Maclean’s has prepared the following mini-glossary of a market downturn.

MONTREAL – Bargain shoppers are enjoying deep discounts on winter apparel as unseasonably warm weather in Eastern Canada has left retailers with overflowing stocks of snowsuits, boots and tuques.
Sales of winter outdoor clothing have plummeted as a result of temperatures that have been above normal this winter, said Fred Fox, CEO of Planalytics, a Pennsylvania firm that researches how weather affects North American businesses.
Ontario and Quebec recorded their warmest and driest November and December in more than 55 years, Fox said. Sales of winter boots were down 16 and eight per cent in those two months compared to the same period the previous year, while winter wear was off 11 and three per cent.
He said the next 30 to 45 days will be a bonanza for those shopping for winter clothing.
“If you don’t need it for this season, certainly stock up on it for next season,” he said. “If it’s not marked down 75 per cent, it will be very soon.”
Apparel is a retailer’s cash crop, generating hefty margins exceeding 50 per cent…

2016 Predictions

– myownadvisor.ca

Learn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
I enjoy predictions, I treat them as entertainment.  I had some fun with my 2015 predictions and I actually got a few of them right.  When it comes to the financial markets, I think people should “buckle up” for 2016.  I think it’s going to be a wild ride.  Oil is crashing, our Canadian dollar has tanked and my Senators are up and down.  I’ll be going to a few games between now and April to cheer my hometown team into the playoffs.  Will the Senators make the playoffs?  Where will oil finish the year?  What stocks will raise their dividends in 2016?  How will our dollar finish?  Here’s what I think about a bunch of stuff in 2016.

The Ottawa Senators will make the playoffs.
The Chicago Blackhawks will win The Stanley Cup.  A safe bet?
Telus will increase their dividend by 5%.
Enbridge will increase their dividend by 5%.  Might be a stretch.
The Dow will finish the year at 16,500.
Coca-Cola will increase their dividend by 3%…

DETROIT – The final destination is a mystery, but General Motors is taking another step on its fast-moving journey into new ways of getting around.
The company on Thursday announced that it’s formed a brand called “Maven” that will run its car-sharing ventures, including a new one that will begin competing with ZipCar next month in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and spread to other metro areas later this year.
GM executives said they expect their main business model of selling cars to people will continue to be large, but they also see big changes coming with ride- and car-sharing.
“We see significant opportunity as that change occurs,” GM President Dan Ammann said. “We very much as a company want to make sure we’re at the forefront of that.”
The unveiling of Maven comes on the heels of two new mobility deals announced by GM this year: a $500 million investment in ride-hailing company Lyft and the purchasing of the remnants of defunct ride-hailing company Sidecar…
