CALGARY – Canadian Natural Resources Ltd. (TSX:CNQ) says it’s committing $2 billion of this year’s capital budget to advancing its Horizon project and then expects the oilsand operation’s funding requirements to drop in 2017 and thereafter.
The Calgary-based company views Horizon as a key part of its future business plan, as it depends less on conventional sources of oil and gas.
The full 2016 capital budget, including spending on Horizon Phases 2B and 3, has been set at between $3.5 billion and $3.9 billion.
CNRL says the Horizon expansion budget will drop to $1 billion in 2017 and to zero in 2018, after Phase 3 starts production in next year’s fourth quarter.
The budget projection was contained in CNRL’s latest financial report, which showed it eked out a small profit in the fourth quarter but ended 2015 with a full-year net loss of $637 million or 58 cents per share.
The three months ended Dec. 31 showed $131 million of net income or 12 cents per share, which was an improvement over the third quarter but down from nearly $1…

TORONTO – Toronto and Vancouver will continue to lead luxury home sales in Canada this spring in both volume and price, and mostly for the same reasons they dominated last year, says a new report released Wednesday.
Sotheby’s International Realty Canada cites macro-economic trends including limited inventory and strong demand from both domestic and international buyers in making its prediction.
The realtor says the Greater Toronto Area will lead the $1-million-plus residential real estate market, with continued sales gains and price escalation.
Notable growth is also expected in Vancouver, especially its top-tier residential market, with increases anticipated in the $4-million-plus category.
“Luxury home sales in Toronto and Vancouver will continue to defy gravity this spring,” Brad Henderson, president and CEO of Sotheby’s International Realty Canada, said in a statement.
“Both markets have the potential for significant gains and we expect heightened demand and insufficient inventory to drive price escalation and sellers’ market conditions…

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates – A Qatar-based media group that has already moved into international sports broadcasting has purchased a 100-per cent stake in the film studio Miramax, part of its expansion into the entertainment business.
The beIN Media Group, which earlier spun off from Doha’s Al-Jazeera network, bought the studio famous for “Pulp Fiction,” ”No Country for Old Men” and “The English Patient” from investors including Colony Capital and the Qatar Investment Authority, the Gulf nation’s sovereign wealth fund.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed in a statement announcing the purchase late Wednesday. The beIN network did not respond to requests for comment Thursday.
“Miramax is a successful film and television company, providing a strong and recognizable brand, a unique library and industry expertise that complement beIN Media Group’s plans to grow across the entertainment industry and develop new content production,” Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, beIN’s chairman and CEO, said in the statement…
