The COVID-19 virus has caused a global pandemic and forced countries around the world to close their borders to visitors. While this is the right move to curb the spread of the virus and flatten the curve, the result is that many Canadians have found themselves postponing travel plans indefinitely.
Fortunately, many credit card, airline, and hotel rewards programs have taken measures to assist customers with the current predicament. Some programs have paused the expiry date on their points, while others have extended their elite membership status requirements.
Here’s what you need to know about the changes to travel reward programs due to COVID-19.

Top credit card loyalty programs have been inundated with cancellations and requests since the World Health Organization announced a global pandemic in March…
Although global travel has been nearly nonexistent for a few months now, airlines have been hard at work supporting their loyal customers through extended memberships and rewards program updates.
Currently, Aeroplan members can earn Air Canada Altitude status from the comfort of their own home through everyday Tavel at Home activities. Members who reach 50,000 Aeroplan Miles between April 20 and May 31, 2020, will receive Altitude Prestige 25K status through to 2021.
During the same timeframe, Air Canada Altitude members can earn bonus miles and potentially upgrade one membership level.
Plus, you can now buy Aeroplan Miles or gift them to family members or friends. Aeroplan Miles aren’t limited to travel and can be used for merchandise or gift cards, although they are known for flight and hotel redemptions. Right now, half of the miles you purchase can also be used to advance within the status system.
For a limited time, Aeroplan is offering members bonus rewards when they purchase miles…
