January 27 Update: Hainan Airlines confirms Calgary-Beijing service, Triple Avios for Accor stays, China Airlines Vancouver bonus! News, Tips & Tricks As we mentioned well before Christmas, there were rumours of Hainan Airlines launching new service between Calgary and Beijing. Looks like that rumour has come true as Airlineroute.net has found that Hainan has loaded the flights into their system. The service will commence on June 30 and will operate 3x per week. We already cover Hainan and their Fortune Wings program here on Rewards Canada as the airline does serve Toronto. It is currently running a promotion for the entire year for flights between North America and China of up to 20,000 bonus Fortune Wings miles so the new Calgary flight should automatically be included. One should also note that Hainan Airlines is an Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan partner so you don’t have to credit miles to Fortune Wings if you do take this flight. At the time of writing this the two airlines had not launched redemption options although that should be coming soon. According to recent RateSupermarket research, roughly half of Canadians admit to changing their minds about their desired family size due to the associated costs.
They may be on to something. As authors Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Tyagi note in their book, The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers & Fathers Are Going Broke, the single best predictor of future financial troubles is having a child.
While two-income families make more money today than a one-income family did a generation ago, the basics – housing, groceries, taxes, entertainment, and transportation – leave more and more families with less money at the end of the month, they maintain. What’s more, with both parents in the workforce, the chances of someone getting laid off or getting too sick to work also doubles.
Having Kids Is Very Expensive
From their point of view, the families in the worst financial trouble aren’t the usual suspects. They’re not the very young, tempted by the freedom of their first credit cards…
