Want to keep this holiday season merry? Consider sticking to your budget.
But that doesn’t mean you need to be miserly and skip the holiday decorations. Instead, consider some small space holiday decorating tips that are light on the wallet, and make a plan for Christmas shopping.
Seneca College professor and certified financial planner Sam Albanese suggests keeping a list and checking it way more than twice when it comes to holiday purchases. One good way to avoid overspending is to avoid spontaneous purchases and consider keeping a separate “holiday” bank account, which gets depleted with each bill and purchase.
This doesn’t mean you can’t use a credit card, just make sure you have the money to pay it off—immediately. Albanese explains that a credit card debt of $2,000, with an interest rate of 19.9%, could easily take more than 20 years to fully repay if only the minimum payment is made each month.
For those celebrating in tiny spaces, here’s a few tips for small-space decorations (that are also light on the wallet):

‘Tis the season: Indebted Canadians pull out the plasticTHE CANADIAN PRESS/Ryan Remiorz
As the holiday shopping season ticks down to its final minutes, many Canadians will make a flurry of last-minute pre-Christmas purchases before launching themselves into Boxing Day’s maw. And odds are, nearly all of those transactions will rung be up on credit cards.
The country’s love affair with borrowing—households in Canada owed a record $1.64 for every dollar of disposable income they earned in the third quarter, according to Statistics Canada data released this month—is matched only by our fondness for paying with plastic, despite interest rates on carried balances as high as 25 per cent.
One Bank of Canada study last year found Canadians are among the world’s biggest users of credit cards, which account for more than 40 per cent of the value of their purchases. That’s even higher than in the United States, where President George W. Bush once famously urged Americans to demonstrate their resolve after the Sept…

OTTAWA – The Canadian government ran a $941-million deficit for October compared with a $3.21-billion deficit in the same month last year.
Ottawa’s fiscal monitor says the improvement came as revenue increased 11.1 per cent, boosted by higher personal income tax and Goods and Services Tax revenues.
The results of a year ago included a one-time adjustment downward due to the introduction of the Conservative government’s income-splitting plan for families and a doubling of the children’s fitness tax credit.
The newly elected Liberal government is planning to discontinue income splitting.
Program spending for October 2015 increased by 0.4 per cent, while public debt charges fell 6.4 per cent.
For the April to October period, the government posted a surplus of $634 million compared with a deficit of $3.95 billion in the same period a year earlier.
Revenue for the first seven months of the fiscal year was up 8.7 per cent, while program spending was up 6.6 per cent. Public debt charges fell 3…

HONG KONG – The Japanese company that owns the Hello Kitty brand says it has fixed a security leak in an online fan site for the famous character that compromised the personal information of 3.3 million users.
Sanrio’s digital arm said Tuesday that it has “corrected” a security vulnerability on the SanrioTown.com website and is carrying out an investigation.
The leak was revealed by a security researcher on Dec. 19.
Sanrio Digital said the leak gave access to personal information such as names and birthdates but not credit card or other payment details. It added that no information was stolen.
Earlier this month kids’ technology maker VTech reported a data breach that exposed the personal information of more than 6 million children around the world.
