Manitoba budget cuts tax credit for students, holds line on spending
– canadianbusiness.com
Post-secondary graduates are taking a financial hit in a relatively stand-pat budget tabled by the Manitoba government Tuesday that holds the line on spending and makes a modest dent in the deficit.
The budget forecasts an overall deficit of $840 million this fiscal year _ $32 million less than last year.
The Progressive Conservatives are phasing out by next year an income-tax rebate on tuition for graduates who stay and work in the province. It is worth up to $2,500 a year per person.
There are no increases to personal or business taxes, but a number of other tax credits are being capped or cut.
A tax credit for research and development is being reduced to 15 per cent from 20. A credit for unpaid caregivers who help relatives stay in their own homes is being capped for the first time at $1,400 a year.
One tax credit is being increased. The maximum credit for donations to politicians and political parties is rising to $1,000 from $650.
The budget keeps a leash on spending in major departments at or near the rate of inflation…

American Express SimplyCash Preferred Credit Card now earns a straight 2% – making it the best Cash Back card in Canada
– RewardsCanada.ca
As you may have seen earlier today we released our first ever Top Cash Back Credit Card rankings and taking first place in the inaugural rankings is the SimplyCash Preferred Card from American Express. Had we released the rankings early in March like we had originally planned this would not have been the case, first place would have actually gone to the mbna Rewards World Elite MasterCard. However we were advised by Amex that the SimplyCash Preferred was being enhanced, and that is word you have to be careful with in the loyalty industry since lots of times it is used to disguise a devaluation but that is not the case this time. The SimplyCash Preferred card is getting a true enhancement as American Express wanted it to be a market and that it has become. Gone is the 1.5% on the first $100,000 spending and 1.25% thereafter. In its place is an unlimited 2% back on all eligible purchases with no caps. Yes there are some slight negative changes but those are easily eclipsed by that 2% rate…
