Once again there’s a lot of them in Economy and Business Class to choose from and this time we see Calgary and Halifax with huge discounts on the table. Sorry Vancouver, you’ve been left out of the mix this month. That brings us to the offers which are for flying on Lufthansa out of Montreal and Toronto, Austrian Airlines out of Montreal and Eurowings Discover for Calgary and Halifax. The flights on Lufthansa see the usual just under 51% discount for business class awards while Austrian has the same but also 50% off economy class and premium economy award flights. It’s the Eurowings Discover flights that take the cake this month though! You can fly on these new Eurowings Discover routes between Calgary or Halifax and Frankfurt for 75% off! Here’s your Rewards Canada Daily update! Your daily dose (or near daily dose) of loyalty program, credit card and travel news, bonuses, deals and more. This update is brought to you by the HSBC World Elite Mastercard which is currently offering a welcome bonus of up to 100,000 bonus points worth $500, has no foreign transaction fees and no annual fee in the first year!  We continue to hear from numerous readers via email and blog comments that Scotia credit card multipliers are not coding correctly in the new Scene+ program. Many grocery and other purchases that should be 5x or 3x points with the Scotia Gold Amex Card are only posting as 1 point per dollar. We’ve also heard that the total points balance in some members Scene+ accounts are lower than they were in their Scotia Rewards accounts. If either of these (or any issues for that matter) are happening to you be sure to keep track of all your purchases that should be earning 5x points and make note of what your points balance was before the new program launched so that if Scotia does not rectify these you can approach them to have all the issues corrected…

I got married in 1978 and divorced in 2009. I understand that I might be able to receive some of my ex-husband’s CPP retirement pension once I am retired. However, I didn’t apply when we initially divorced and I’m not sure whether I can still do so now. Do I have to wait until after he dies to apply for part of his pension?

FPAC responds:

Credit splitting (often confused with pension sharing) is when, upon divorce or separation, the total Canada Pension Plan contributions for each year of the marriage are added together and then split evenly between both spouses. Both legally married and common-law spouses can apply for CPP credit splitting. 

Since you were legally married there is no limit as to when you may apply for the credit splitting with your ex-husband. However, if he is deceased, you would need to do so within three years of his death. (If you were common-law spouses, you would have a 48-month window to apply for CPP splitting…
