OTTAWA _ The amount Canadians owe relative to their income hit a new high in the third quarter.
Statistics Canada said Thursday that household credit market debt as a proportion of household disposable income increased to 171.1 per cent, up from 170.1 per cent in the second quarter.
That means there was $1.71 in credit market debt, which includes consumer credit and mortgage and non-mortgage loans, for every dollar of household disposable income.
Benjamin Reitzes, Canadian rates and macro strategist at the Bank of Montreal, said the upward trend in household debt continues unabated.
“And, with homebuyers rushing to get into the market ahead of the new OSFI rule change that takes effect on Jan. 1, 2018, we could see a further increase in Q4,” Reitzes wrote in a report.
“However, that suggests we could see some flattening out of the ratio in 2018 _ though don’t bet on it as housing has been persistently resilient.”
Household debt is often cited as a key risk to the Canadian economy by the Bank of Canada and others…

A closer look at the Membership Rewards Fixed Points Travel programThis post is the third and final part of a closer look at American Express’ Membership Rewards program. Since 2014 Rewards Canada has rated it as the number one loyalty currency for Canadians, and while the program has evolved over time, innovative new features keep the program at the top of our list. One of the most recent additions is the Fixed Points Travel Program. The Fixed Points Travel Program is a take on traditional reward flights from frequent flyer programs. That is, you use a set amount of points to travel within, or to, certain regions without typically worrying about the price.Booking flights using fixed points can come handy, especially during peak seasons when market fares are quite high. Amex’s Fixed Points Travel Program doesn’t limit specific airlines you need to book with. You can literally fly any airline, any time to any destination! This provides a lot more flexibility than your traditional reward program, where typically the biggest complaint is a lack of flight availability! Here are the points grids from Amex’s Fixed Point Travel Program:The portfolio of Membership Rewards’ earning cards provides various earning options, from 1 point per dollar spent to up to 5 points per dollar, which means you can fly for as little as $3,000 in spending depending on what card you have…

How students turn on-the-job training into college creditPeters, whose in-house management at McDonald’s counted toward his business diploma, can see himself owning an outlet in the future. (Photograph by Jalani Morgan)
Business student Solomon Peters shaved $1,500 from his tuition and reduced his class time by 168 hours at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ont., thanks to an agreement last year between his employer and Ontario’s 24 public colleges.
The 30-year-old, who will graduate this semester after pursuing a two-year diploma part-time, also manages two McDonald’s outlets in Toronto. His college will count the fast food chain’s in-house training for managers as the equivalent of first-year business studies.
Peters, now a general manager at McDonald’s, began working for the company at the age of 15. Since then, for every promotion, he has enrolled in McDonald’s training programs that offer lessons on human resources, organizational behaviour, finance and leadership. That on-the-job training covered the first-year business curriculum, as vetted by Colleges Ontario, a provincial association…

TORONTO _ Canada’s main stock index dropped sharply from its record finish yesterday, as American markets also lost ground amid uncertainty that a sweeping U.S. tax bill will pass.
The S&P/TSX composite index tumbled 120.13 points to 16,016.46 in a broad-based decline that included the influential materials, financials and energy sectors.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average retreated 76.77 points to 24,508.66. The S&P 500 index was down 10.84 points to 2,652.01 and the Nasdaq composite index gave back 19.27 points to 6,856.53.
Indexes turned lower today after U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio said he would vote against a proposed bill that would give generous tax cuts to corporations unless a child tax credit was expanded.
The Canadian dollar closed at an average trading of 78.09 cents US, up 0.28 of a U.S. cent.
In commodities, the January crude contract advanced 44 cents to US$57.04 per barrel and the January natural gas contract was down three cents to US$2.68 per mmBTU.
The February gold contract was up US$8…
