When to prioritize debt repayment over savingIn our April 2016 issue of MoneySense, we introduced you to Lindsay Tithecott, a 29-year-old who is trying to pay down debt, build up savings and buy a larger condo. Throughout the year we’ll be giving her a financial challenge every two weeks to help her get her finances in tip top shape. Make sure to follow along! In her last challenge, we asked Lindsay to rethink her budget-busting fitness classes. This week’s challenge involves more budget basics.
Challenge No. 2
Lindsay’s budget factors in savings as if they were an expense. This can make budgeting very confusing. So for her second challenge, we asked Lindsay to redo her budget, starting with annual disposable income and not including any savings at all.

Q: “I’m selling an older car privately and don’t want to guarantee it. If the buyer gets a safety inspection, am I off the hook?”
—Name withheld, Edmonton, Alta.
A: A provincial safety standards inspection is not a warranty, although it may give the buyer some peace of mind regarding the condition of some safety systems on the vehicle. Instead, prepare a bill of sale or receipt that includes a disclaimer like the one recommended by Ontario’s Used Car Dealers Association, which states: “This vehicle is being sold ‘as is,’ unfit, not emissions tested and isn’t represented as being in a roadworthy condition, mechanically sound or guaranteed.” Sign it, and make sure the buyer does too.

TORONTO – Manulife has started to offer life insurance for people who are HIV-positive, a first for a Canadian company, the insurer said Friday.
The company (TSX:MFC) said it made the decision after it reviewed the latest mortality and long-term survival rates of HIV-positive Canadians and gained a better perspective on individual risk profiles.
“Manulife was the first insurer to underwrite people with diabetes, and we are continuing in that tradition by making life insurance a possibility for the more than 75,000 Canadians who have tested HIV-positive,” Manulife Canada chief executive Marianne Harrison said.

“This is the result of work completed by our research and innovation team and working closely with our colleagues in the United States at John Hancock.”
The company said applicants who have tested HIV-positive, are between the ages of 30 and 65, and meet certain criteria, can apply for individual life insurance for up to $2 million.
A revolution in drug treatments in recent years has changed an HIV-positive diagnosis from one of a quick death sentence to a chronic disease that can be managed with proper medication…
