Double-A stocks
While there are scores of interesting stocks in the tables, the double-A companies always stand out. Four of them happen to be in the insurance business. Both EMC Insurance (EMCI) and State Auto (STFC) provide property and casualty insurance. The former is based in Des Moines, Iowa, and the latter in Columbus, Ohio. United Fire (UFCS) hails from Cedar Rapids, Ohio, and adds life insurance to the mix. Independence (IHC) is the fourth member of the club. It focuses on life and health insurance from Stamford, Conn. All trade near book value and at below 10 times earnings.
The last four are led by Berkshire Hills (BHLB), which is a savings and loan based in Pittsfield, Mass., that pays a dividend yield of 3.2% and trades for less than book value.
