OTTAWA – Statistics Canada says the country’s net foreign debt was reduced by $98.1 billion in the fourth quarter.
The agency says this put Canada into a net asset position of $26.7 billion.
It says the decline in net debt was attributable to relatively stronger foreign equity markets and a weaker Canadian dollar, which raised the value of Canada’s international assets more than it increased the value of international liabilities.
During 2013, Canada’s overall net international investment position increased by $328.8 billion, despite an ongoing current account deficit.
Canada’s net foreign indebtedness with the United States decreased by $176.4 billion to $280 billion at the end of 2013.
At the same time, Canada’s net asset position with the aggregate “other countries” increased by $152.4 billion to $306.7 billion.

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Irving Pulp and Paper says it will spend about $450 million to modernize a pulp mill in Saint John, N.B.
The announcement comes the day after the provincial government announced it was raising caps by 20 per cent a year on softwood that will be made available for harvest on Crown lands in its new 10-year forestry strategy.
The company says work on its mill on the west side of Saint John is slated to begin this spring and will create the full-time equivalent of 600 jobs.
CEO Jim Irving thanked the province for ensuring there would be a supply of wood to allow the modernization of the facility to go ahead.
Work on the mill will be done in two phases, with the first phase lasting 24 months and the second taking 30 months.
The company says its spending on the project is the largest investment in a pulp mill in Canada since 1993.
