NEW YORK, N.Y. – NEW YORK (AP) _ Morgan Stanley (MS) on Tuesday reported fourth-quarter profit had a dramatic rise to $1.04 billion.
The bank, based in New York, said it had earnings of 47 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to 40 cents per share.
The results missed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 47 cents per share.
The investment bank posted revenue of $7.76 billion in the period, also missing Street forecasts. Analysts expected $8.11 billion, according to Zacks.
Morgan Stanley shares have declined 10 per cent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has declined almost 2 per cent. The stock has risen 4.5 per cent in the last 12 months.

The World Economic Forum kicks off in Davos, Switzerland tomorrow, and economic inequality is expected to be one of the hottest issues on the table. But in the mean time, the IMF has downgraded their economic forecast for the next few years – citing a level of growth managing director Christine Lagarde has called “too low, too brittle, and too lopsided”.
Today, Obama makes his State of the Union address, during which he’s expected to talk tax policy for the super-rich. ATLANTA – ATLANTA (AP) _ Delta Air Lines Inc. (DAL) on Tuesday reported a fourth-quarter loss of $712 million, after reporting a profit in the same period a year earlier.
On a per-share basis, the Atlanta-based company said it had a loss of 86 cents. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring costs and restructuring costs, came to 78 cents per share.
The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 75 cents per share.
The airline posted revenue of $9.65 billion in the period, which also beat Street forecasts. Analysts expected $9.59 billion, according to Zacks.
Delta shares have decreased roughly 7 per cent since the beginning of the year, while the Standard & Poor’s 500 index has fallen almost 2 per cent. The stock has risen 48 per cent in the last 12 months.
