Hi all, and welcome to your Weekend Reading list. I had a few posts this week, encouraging folks to consider using the Canada Pension Plan to model their portfolio after and I shared some Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF) basics.
Here are some of my favourite articles from this past week.
Boomer and Echo gave us a number of things to think about when retiring overseas.
Rob Carrick said for income investors, the best inflation hedge is a stock that raises its dividends every year. For example, TD, National Bank and RBC have grown their dividends by between 7-9% annually over the past five years. The cost of living was up an average 1.7% per year over the same period.
Larry Swedroe wrote about conflicting goals for investors. What goal is more important to you, sleeping well at night or taking on more (equity) risk for an earlier retirement?
Michael James on Money says you should consider CRA as a partner with your RRSP.

Macau developer, Karl Lagerfeld announce plans for Chanel designer to create first hotel
– canadianbusiness.com
BEIJING, China – Karl Lagerfeld and a Macau casino operator announced plans Friday for the Chanel designer to create his first hotel.
The 270-room Karl Lagerfeld Hotel will open in 2017 in a 20-story tower in the gambling enclave in southern China, according to Lagerfeld and the Sociedade de Jogos de Macau.
“An entire hotel designed by me. It’s the first time for me! I think the idea is great!” said Lagerfeld in a statement.
The announcement comes after Lagerfeld startled visitors to Chanel’s fashion show in Paris this week by holding the event in a full-scale recreation of a supermarket with Chanel-branded groceries.
The Lisboa Palace complex also is to include a Versace-themed hotel designed by the Italian fashion label and announced by SJM in September.
Friday’s announcement gave no financial details.
SJM was founded by tycoon Stanley Ho, who held a monopoly on gambling in Macau until 2004. Ho transferred most of his 32 per cent stake in SJM’s parent company, Sociedade de Turismo e Divercoes de Macau, to his relatives in 2011…

The Bitcoin had two faces
– macleans.ca
The Bitcoin saga has taken an interesting twist, with a revived print Newsweek announcing that it has found the reclusive inventor of the… er, well, what to call Bitcoin depends on whom you talk to and what week it is, but it’s generally considered either a full-feature alternative currency or a protocol for electronic money transfers. (And a dessert topping.) The Newsweek cover story is scheduled to be the first thing to appear on the cover of a physical magazine called Newsweek since December 31, 2012. It declares the inventor of Bitcoin, an elusive figure known on the internet only by the name “Satoshi Nakamoto”, to be… drum roll, please… a guy named Satoshi Nakamoto.
Newsweek’s Satoshi is a 64-year-old Japanese-American living in Temple City, California. “Satoshi Nakamoto” is the name on his birth certificate, although he goes by Dorian. Mr. Nakamoto has a physics degree and has done computer engineering for a number of military-industrial firms, as well as one online stock-price provider…
