Iamgold to sell Quebec niobium mine to Magris-led group in US$530-million deal

TORONTO – Iamgold Corp. (TSX:IMG) will sell its Niobec mine in Quebec for about US$500 million to a group led by Aaron Regent, a veteran mining executive who has previously been CEO of two major Canadian companies — Barrick Gold (TSX:ABX) and Falconbridge, a copper and nickel producer that was later sold to Xtrata.
Regent now heads Magris Resources, a Toronto-based company that has partnered on the Niobec deal with Hong Kong-based CEF Holdings Ltd (CEF) and Temasek, a Singapore-based investment manager.
“We are delighted that we have been able to reach an agreement to acquire Niobec from Iamgold,” Regent said in a statement before North American markets opened Friday.
The Niobec mine is one of the world’s three largest producers of niobium, a silvery metalic element used in steel alloys, arc welding and superconductors.
Iamgold, another Toronto-based company that focuses mainly on gold production in several countries, will receive an additional US$30 million with an adjacent rare earth deposit, once it goes into commercial production, making the total Niobec deal worth about US$530 million…

North American stocks head for strong open amid strong U.S. employment data

TORONTO – The Toronto stock market was set for a higher open Friday as data showed a healthy increase in U.S. job creation during September.
The U.S. Labor Department reported that the American economy created 248,000 jobs last month, which handily beat expectations of about 215,000. The jobless rate ticked down 0.2 of a point to 5.9 per cent, the lowest level since July 2008. August job creation was revised upward from 142,000 to 180,000.
Canadian employment data for last month will be released next Friday.
U.S. futures ran ahead smartly with the Dow Jones industrial futures ahead 100 points to 16,824, the Nasdaq futures gained 27.5 points to 4,005.5 and the S&P 500 futures ran up 13.75 points to 1,952.25.
The Canadian dollar was down 0.41 of a cent to 89.17 cents US as the greenback strengthened following the jobs data.
The loonie was also pressured by subpar trade data.

BCE gets enough stock from Aliant shareholders to take regional affliate private

MONTREAL – BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE) has received more than 90 per cent of the publicly held common shares of Bell Aliant (TSX:BA) and will now move to acquire the res under a $3.95-billion privitization plan announced in July. BCE had already owned 44 per cent of Halifax-based Aliant’s common stock. The Montreal-based parent of Bell Canada says it expects to pay for the tendered Aliant stock on Tuesday.
