The head of WestJet Airlines says he sees a possible silver lining with the uncertainty surrounding new U.S. border policies: a boost in international visitors to Canada.
CEO Gregg Saretsky said while the airline hasn’t yet seen any jump in interest to its Canadian destinations, he believes the potential is there given the rapidly changing situation in the U.S.
“As border issues and political issues continue to intensify, I think there’s perhaps an opportunity for Canada to benefit from increasing foreign tourist arrivals,” Saretsky said Tuesday on an earnings conference call.
“We are watching with interest what’s going on with the changing political landscape. We’re working with the U.S. customs and border patrol agency to ensure that we’re following laws as we need to, but obviously that situation is very fluid and from day to day there’s pronouncements and lots of back and forth.”
Bob Cummings, WestJet’s executive vice-president commercial, said the company hasn’t seen a decline in visitors to the U…

Oil producer BP’s earnings rose less than expected in the fourth quarter, as it sought to adapt to low energy prices with cost cuts, asset sales and a pullback in investment plans.
A key measure of net income, the underlying replacement cost profit, rose to $400 million from $196 million in the same period last year. That missed analyst forecasts for $540 million, as surveyed by data provider FactSet. The profit measure, which excludes fluctuations in the value of inventories, is the industry’s preferred gauge of earnings.
Shares in BP fell 2.6 per cent to 464.25 pence in London after the release of the figures.
Oil companies have been cutting costs and selling assets after oil prices plunged to 12-year lows in January of last year. Brent crude, the international benchmark, averaged about $44 a barrel last year, down from more than $100 as recently as September 2014. Brent traded at $55.87 a barrel on Monday in London.
“We have delivered solid results in tough conditions _ and are well prepared for any volatility in oil pricing,” CEO Bob Dudley said in a statement…

BlackBerry (TSX:BB) is launching a new product this month to allow developers to add secure text, video and voice messaging into apps.
The Waterloo, Ont.-based company says the product, named BBM Enterprise SDK, can be used in apps requiring sensitive communication _ for instance, between financial advisers and investors, or surgeons in different rooms in a hospital.
The cloud-based communications platform for developers will be available worldwide later this month for iOS and Android, and pricing will be subscription rather than usage based.
BlackBerry’s chief operating officer Marty Beard said this is a new revenue stream for the company that is expected to drive growth.
He said the former smartphone maker has been making an aggressive shift into becoming a pure software company and this is part of that transition.
In 2016, BlackBerry announced it would stop making smartphones, and has since signed multiple deals with companies that will license its software, and make and sell BlackBerry-branded phones…
