CALGARY – Agrium Inc. (TSX:AGU) says it’s going ahead with a US$720-million plan to expand its nitrogen plant in Borger, Texas.
The Calgary-based fertilizer giant announced Tuesday its board of directors has approved the project, which will add a new urea production unit of about 610,000 tonnes.
Of that, about 100,000 tonnes will be fuel-grade urea, which can be used to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions in vehicles.
The expansion will also increase annual ammonia capacity by 145,000 tonnes to about 635,000 tonnes.
Construction is set to begin next month and is expected to wrap up in the second half of 2015.
In addition to nitrogen, Agrium also produces and sells potash and phosphates.
“Agrium is one of the largest and lowest cost producers of nitrogen in the world. The upgrade and expansion at the Borger facility will continue to grow our nitrogen footprint in this important agricultural region while providing a strong return on investment. The project will ensure the facility’s future longevity, while using the latest in environmental control technology,” said CEO Chuck Magro…

Tax Havens – the pot calling the kettle black

When it comes to preventing tax avoidance or evasion, it seems that many countries apply the principle that while making sure collection of their own taxes is high priority, enabling other countries to collect their own doesn’t matter so much. The degree of secrecy taken together with the scale of activity in each country make for some surprises in the Financial Secrecy Index ranking of world countries by the Tax Justice Network.Achetype tax havens like the Cayman Islands are high (#4) on the list for sure but it is refined, reserved Switzerland in top spot. Nipping at the Cayman’s heels, ahead of Bermuda, Panama and Jersey, is the good ole USA in #6 spot! Why? Because while it is fanatical about collecting its own taxes, it doesn’t bother nearly as much in helping other countries collect theirs. #17 Canada sins that way too, if one reads the linked country report, backed up by very detailed database info.Let he who is without sin etc.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Shares of Tesla Motors Inc. surged 16 per cent Tuesday after a Wall Street analyst told investors that Tesla could shake up the electric utility sector as well as the auto industry.
Analyst Adam Jonas of Morgan Stanley wrote in a note to investors that Tesla could nearly double its share of the global car market by 2028. And it also could create another lucrative business by building battery packs for energy storage. He doubled his target price for Tesla stock to $320 per share from $153.
Tesla shares rose $34.65 to $252.30 in midday trading.
Tesla is expected this week to formally announce the building of a “Gigafactory” to produce batteries with Panasonic and other partners. It would be the largest lithium-ion battery pack factory in the U.S.
Such batteries could be used at homes and businesses to store energy for times of peak electricity use. Electric companies nationwide are switching to a system that charges people more for energy during peak hours, such as early evening, and batteries could cut those costs…
