Then and Now – TransAlta
– myownadvisor.ca
This post is a continuation of my series Then and Now where I revisit some older blogposts and either rip them to shreds (because my thinking has changed) or I’ll confirm my position on some personal finance topics or specific investments. My previous post was about Enbridge where this stock has gained over 100%. Today’s post will be about TransAlta.
Then
Then
I started writing about TransAlta on this site back in 2010. I actually purchased some TransAlta stock earlier that year.
TransAlta stock was just over $20 when I purchased it.
I purchased enough stock to start running a synthetic DRIP, whereby when the dividends are paid, the money is reinvested to buy at least one more full share each quarter commission-free.
I ran the DRIP for a couple of years then stopped.
Since early 2012, TransAlta stock has been a mess.
TransAlta cut their dividend in February 2014 by 50%.
Now
TransAlta share price is just over $13.
I continue to hold some TransAlta stock but I’ve lost money.
I continue to collect the TransAlta dividends paid in cash…
Carlos Slim’s telecom giant America Movil will sell assets to avoid limits of Mexico reform
– canadianbusiness.com
MEXICO CITY – The telecom company America Movil said Tuesday that it will sell off some assets to reduce its market share in Mexico in the face of the country’s telecommunications reform designed to break up monopolies.
The company of magnate Carlos Slim said its board of directors has agreed to sell enough assets to put the company at less than 50 per cent of the market. America Movil controls about 70 per cent of the mobile and about 80 per cent of fixed telephone markets in Mexico.
America Movil, which is a leading cellphone service provider in Latin America, did not specify which assets would be sold or to whom.
The announcement came as Mexican lawmakers prepare to vote on laws to implement the reform, which seeks to promote competition in both telecommunications and broadcasting. Analysts have said the reform as written will have the biggest impact on the holdings of Slim, who is one of the world’s richest men.
Under the constitutional changes, passed more than a year ago, the Federal Telecommunications Institute in March declared America Movil “dominant,” with more than 50 per cent of the market, imposing a number of restrictions to diminish its power…

OTTAWA – Canada’s housing market may be cooling, but there’s no loss of appetite for high-end real estate, according to Sotheby’s.
The realtor says in a new report that sales of homes worth more than $1 million boomed in the first half of 2014, with all four key metropolitan areas covered — Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal — recording double-digit gains.
Vancouver and Toronto continue to lead the way with sales of homes worth $1 million or more increasing 34 per cent compared with the first six months of 2013.
That was followed by Calgary with a 17 per cent increase and Montreal with an 11 per cent gain, even though Quebec’s largest city posted an overall decline in sales in 2013.
Sotheby’s says that given Canada’s strong economic fundamentals, improved consumer confidence and super-low lending rates, all markets are expected to gain momentum in the second half of the year.
Sotheby’s adds it also expects international demand in top-tier real estate to remain robust despite the removal of Canada’s immigrant investor class program…
