Authorities close German unit of Canada’s Maple Financial
– canadianbusiness.com
BERLIN – German authorities have ordered the closure of Maple Bank after the Canadian-owned company was investigated for alleged tax evasion and money laundering.
Maple Bank, based in Frankfurt, Germany, is part of Canada’s Maple Financial Group.
The Federal Financial Supervisory Authority said Sunday that it has forbidden Maple Bank from making payments or selling assets “due to impending financial over-indebtedness.” The watchdog, known as Bafin, also banned the bank from taking customer payments other than those made to repay debts.
It says the bank, with assets of 5 billion euros ($5.58 billion) and liabilities of around 2.6 billion euros ($2.9 billion), will have to put aside funds to cover tax payments.
Authorities launched a tax probe of Maple Bank last September.

Jordan: Promised trade perks will help employ Syria refugees
– canadianbusiness.com
AMMAN, Jordan – Jordan’s planning minister says his country has been promised easier trade terms by the international community, potentially generating large-scale investment and “hundreds of thousands of job opportunities.”
Imad Fakhoury told reporters Sunday that creating jobs for Jordanians is a priority, but that the trade commitments could also put 200,000 Syrian refugees to work.
Fakhoury spoke after last week’s Syria aid conference, where donors pledged more than $10 billion, including aid to 4.6 million refugees and their regional hosts, such as Jordan.
Donor countries struggling with a large refugee influx over the past year hope to improve the lives of the displaced and keep them in the region.
Fakhoury says that in addition to trade perks, Jordan will also receive billions of dollars in grants and easy loans in coming years.
