TORONTO, Canada – Bank of Montreal says personal finance issues is the No. 2 topic for Canadians who are making New Year resolutions for 2014.
It says only health and fitness is a higher priority among Canadians who are making New Years resolutions this year.
A study released Friday by BMO found 80 per cent of those surveyed in November planned to make some sort of resolution.
Of those, 36 per cent resolved to become financially fit — compared with 51 per cent focused on their physical health and fitness.
BMO says the survey found that 59 per cent of the respondents had a financial plan, and 82 per cent of them believed it helped.
For those without a financial plan, the top reason given (37 per cent) was lack of enough money.
BMO’s study is based on a Polaris online survey of 1,010 Canadians aged 18 years and over, conducted between Nov. 21 and 25.

By Carolyn King

Trading in Canadian stocks resumes Friday after markets here were closed for two days. Here are a few stocks we’re watching.

Blackberry Ltd. co-founder Michael Lazaridis disclosed in a regulatory filing on Tuesday that he reduced his combined stake with another co-founder in the smartphone maker to just under 5%. Mr. Lazaridis also indicated he no longer plans to pursue a joint bid to acquire the company outright. BlackBerry’s stock fell close to 9% in New York trading Thursday. Markets in Canada were closed for the Boxing Day holiday.

Sherritt International Corp. faces pressure from an activist shareholder amid its plans to sell its coal business for C$946 million to focus on its nickel and oil operations. Clarke Inc., a Canadian investment company, wants Sherritt to make changes to its board and give Clarke representation. Sherritt’s stock jumped almost 15% on Tuesday when it announced the asset sale.
