WASHINGTON – The world’s major economies have issued a warning that countries could be punished if they resist new global anti-tax-evasion rules amid the wide-ranging fallout over the so-called Panama Papers.
The massive leak of offshore bank details that has already destroyed a few political careers also destroyed scheduling plans Friday at the spring financial meetings, pushing a G20 meeting well over time.
“Yes, it was a main point of discussion,” Finance Minister Bill Morneau said afterward.
“It was clear that many people wanted to speak of the importance of collective action… In the course of many people pressing the button to speak, we took a little longer than we would have taken otherwise.”
The final communique warned of actions against countries that don’t agree within a year to adopt bank-reporting standards being promoted by international agencies.
It didn’t go as far as some countries wanted — it did not explicitly mention economic sanctions, nor did it single out Panama…

Citigroup Inc., down 6 cents to $44.92
The bank’s profit shrank 27 in the first quarter, but its net income and revenue were greater than expected.
Regions Financial Corp., up 26 cents to $8.74
The Regions Bank holding company reported a bigger profit and greater sales than expected.
Marathon Petroleum Corp., down $1.52 to $37.90
Energy companies took losses as the price of oil fell.
General Motors Co., down 16 cents to $30.56
The company is recalling 1 million Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks because of possible seatbelt problems.
Edison International, up $1.02 to $71.06
Utilities traded higher as bond prices rose. Investors are drawn to their relatively high dividend payouts because rising bond prices are lowering the yields investors can earn from bonds.
Newmont Mining Corp., up 69 cents to $29.37
Mining and metals companies rose as gold and silver prices increased…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – McGraw Hill Financial, the financial-data group behind Standard & Poor’s ratings agency, says it has its sold consumer-ratings unit J.D. Power for $1.1 billion.
The buyer is XIO Group, a London-based investment firm established in 2014 with an aim to invest over $5 billion in North American and European companies and help them expand into Asia.
The parties said they expect the transaction to close in the third quarter.

Top finance officials: World economy still faces threats
WASHINGTON (AP) — The global recovery has regained most of the ground lost from the market turbulence at the beginning of the year, finance officials of the world’s largest economies said Friday. But they worry that growth remains uneven in the face of a variety of threats ranging from terrorist bombings to Britain’s upcoming vote on whether to leave the European Union.
The finance ministers from the Group of 20 major economies pledged to pursue policies that will bolster growth and further stabilize financial markets, but they offered no new measures to accomplish these goals.
