Kinder Morgan CEO says political solution needed for Trans Mountain project
– canadianbusiness.com
CALGARY _ Kinder Morgan is open to discussing an investment in its Trans Mountain pipeline expansion by the Alberta government if there’s clear assurance that the project can actually be completed, the company’s chief executive said Monday.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley suggested Sunday the province could invest in the project to ensure it goes forward after the company said it has suspended all non-essential activities and related spending on the pipeline expansion that would carry Alberta bitumen to an export terminal near Vancouver.
Kinder Morgan has set a May 31 deadline for talks with “various stakeholders” to reach an agreement that could allow the project to proceed. Shares in the company fell as much as 15 per cent but regained some of the losses and were down about eight per cent in mid-afternoon trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
CEO Steve Kean said on a conference call Monday that he’s open to Notley’s suggestion, but there needs to be a clear political signal that there won’t be additional delays to the project…

Firms still positive about future despite uncertainties: central bank
– canadianbusiness.com
OTTAWA _ Canadian firms remain upbeat about future sales, business investment and hiring even as the country faces stubborn economic uncertainties from outside its borders, a Bank of Canada poll suggested Monday.
The central bank’s latest business outlook survey _ its quarterly poll of about 100 firms _ found overall business sentiment has stayed positive and above historical averages, despite some signs the indicator crept down compared with January’s results.
But despite the still-optimistic expectations a number of respondents predicted some moderation ahead as the economy shifts to a more-sustainable pace following last year’s red-hot growth.
The results of the survey, conducted between Feb. 12 and March 9, will be carefully studied by the Bank of Canada ahead of its next decision on its trend-setting interest rate, which is scheduled for next week.
“Business sentiment continues to be positive, supported by healthy sales prospects,” the bank said in the report…

Ontario realtors group calls for stronger protections against grow ops
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO _ The association representing Ontario’s real estate agents wants stronger rules to protect home buyers against the risks involved in purchasing a former grow op, a situation it says will increase once cannabis is legalized this year.
The Ontario Real Estate Association has proposed a series of changes it says can help ensure home buyers are protected from health and safety risks linked to grow ops.
The group is asking the government to restrict the number of plants a home owner can grow in a unit 1,000 square feet or smaller to one plant, down from four.
It also says home inspectors should receive training on how to spot the signs of a former marijuana grow operation.
It also wants to ensure all illegal cannabis operations are inspected by a building inspector and wants all municipalities to be required to register remediation work completed on a property.
Once cannabis is legalized, Ontario intends to sell it in up to 150 stores run by the Liquor Control Board of Ontario to people 19 and older…
