2016 Financial Goals

2016 Financial GoalsLearn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
Happy New Year!
With a new year brings some new opportunities but when it comes to financial planning, looking into the future, I’ll be the first person to acknowledge it’s the process of planning that is important – not the plan itself.
Let me explain…
In 2015, did I predict the oil crash and some of my stocks falling in price with it?  Heck no.  Did I accurately predict how far our Canadian dollar would have fallen?  No again.  Sure, I made some educated guesses when it came to these dividend raises in 2015 but there is absolutely nothing to suggest I can predict the future with any accuracy – and neither can you or anyone else.

This makes financial planning both an exercise in managing assumptions and making those assumptions personal.  Planning for our financial future is personal to us – a good plan for us could be a disaster for you.  This is where we feel yearly goals are at least some help.  With a cloudy crystal ball at least some sense of where we’re going is comforting…

BEIJING, China – China plans to restrict stock sales by large shareholders once a ban imposed in July to stop a slide in prices is lifted this week.
Stockholders who own more than 5 per cent of a company will be required to sell shares through private transactions to “avoid shocks to the market,” the China Securities Regulatory Commission said on its microblog.
Regulators are winding down emergency measures imposed after China’s main market index plunged more than 30 per cent in June.
The six-month ban imposed on sales by large shareholders expires Thursday. Financial analysts have warned that would lead to a new round of selling and more volatility.
Markets are jittery after the benchmark fell by nearly 7 per cent on Monday and trading was halted for the day.
Restrictions on large sales will allow regulators “to realize the orderly withdrawal of temporary measures for the extraordinary volatility of the market,” said the CSRC statement dated Tuesday…

DENVER – A judge on Tuesday dismissed a lawsuit that sought federal approval for a credit union aimed at serving Colorado’s marijuana businesses, saying pot is still illegal under federal law.
Fourth Corner Credit Union challenged a decision by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City to keep the pot bank from accessing the nation’s financial system. The credit union, which was chartered by Colorado in 2014, is not allowed to take deposits or issue credit — leaving many marijuana businesses operating on a cash-only basis.
Colorado voters decided to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012.
Lawyers for the Federal Reserve argued that giving marijuana businesses access to the nation’s banking system is too risky, saying that despite guidance about pot banking from the Department of the Treasury, marijuana money should not be allowed into the nation’s central banking system as long as the drug remains federally outlawed.
U.S. District Judge R. Brooke Jackson dismissed the lawsuit Tuesday because federal law prohibits the drug…
