TORONTO – North American stock markets are rallying this morning amid signs of strength in the U.S. economy.
Energy, materials and gold stocks helped push the S&P/TSX composite index up by 62.69 points to 14,837.79 after nearly two hours of trading.
In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was ahead by 107.24 points to 18,602.90, the broader S&P 500 composite index gained 9.15 points to 2,184.64 and the Nasdaq composite added 18.53 points to 5,223.11.
The Labor Department reported that applications for new unemployment benefits fell last week, a signal that employers could be adding jobs.
Oil prices rebounded with the September crude contract jumping $1.36 at US$43.07 per barrel, while the Canadian dollar gained 0.26 of a U.S. cent to 76.81 cents US.
The December gold contract rose $6.50 to US$1,358.40 an ounce, while September copper contracts rose two cents to US$2.19 a pound.
September natural gas was up two cents at US$2.59 per mmBTU.
