CHICAGO – Chicago and the Detroit area stand to reap millions of dollars in federal grants and private sector investment as part of White House initiative to boost innovation in manufacturing and create jobs.
The White House says President Barack Obama will announce Tuesday the creation of two manufacturing institutes. The Detroit-area institute will focus on lightweight metals, while the Chicago hub will push innovation in digital manufacturing and design.
The institutes are being seeded by $70 million each from the Department of Defence, plus more than $70 million each from non-government sources.
U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin announced Saturday the Department of Defence awarded the grant to UI Labs, a partnership between public and private groups, including universities and manufacturers.
Durbin says the lab will revolutionize the way the country approaches manufacturing.

SOCHI, Russia – The Jamaican bobsled team was the life of the party once again at the Winter Olympics, laughing and joking its way through a trip to Sochi that was fraught with enough financial hardship and travel hijinks to film a sequel to “Cool Runnings.”
They remain as lovable as ever, drawing big crowds wherever they went in Sochi. But they almost never got here at all. And after a 29th-place finish in the two-man competition with a 46-year-old driver, the program faces an uncertain future as it tries to move from novelty act to legitimate medal contender.
“We have the athletic ability. We have shown we can do it,” Chris Stokes, president of the Jamaica Bobsleigh Federation, said. “We just have to pull things together in Jamaica itself.”
The Jamaicans were a sensation when they showed up the Calgary Games in 1988, a fairytale journey from the sandy shores of the Caribbean to the frosty Canadian prairie that inspired the Disney film. They returned the Olympics in 1992, 1994, 1998 and 2002…

I’ve just been trying to do a quick comparison of CP Rail with CN Rail. Gather a few key financial numbers and start thinking and writing. Alas, such a simple task is frustratingly difficult with various data sources, some of them paid subscription, that don’t agree with each other, or are just plain wrong, or unforgivably out of date:EPS estimate dispersion (high vs low analyst estimate for next financial year), a useful measure of a stock’s riskiness – Yahoo Finance Canada has 10.7% for CP but my broker BMOIL has it at 6.3%; for CNR it’s much closer – 12.1% vs 11.8%, respectively. Who’s right? Is it just a different set of brokers?CP year-end results – the release came out on January 29th, yet more than three weeks later, these results are not yet available in BMOIL (which gets its data from GlobeInvestor Gold) or Morningstar Canada (which I happen to pay for!).
