SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Puerto Rico’s governor is already challenging a federal control board just created to oversee the finances of the U.S. territory and help pull it out of an economic crisis.
Alejandro Garcia Padilla announced Monday that he will not submit an amended fiscal plan — the board’s first request of the government. He said he believes new austerity measures will only worsen the crisis. Garcia insisted that the board restructure nearly $70 billion in public debt that he has said is unpayable.
Board members who met in Puerto Rico for the first time last week said the plan needs to be amended in part because it is not realistic and assumes federal financial help when there’ll likely be none.
A board spokesman did not immediately return a message seeking comment.

TORONTO – DH Corp. is slashing its quarterly dividend by 63 per cent starting in January while it undergoes a strategic transformation into a financial technology company.
The Toronto-based company (TSX:DH) says the dividend reduction will free up $85.5 million in cash for other purposes next year.
It expects to allocate 45 to 50 per cent of the money to stock repurchases, 40 to 45 per cent on debt reduction and the rest on growth initiatives.
DH — previously called Davis + Henderson — was at one time primarily a supplier of paper cheques, but has diversified into technology for the financial services industry.
The company said in October that its third quarter showed an accelerated decline in Canadian cheque volumes, as well as delayed technology purchase decisions by large banks outside the United States.

Learn, save, invest and prosper with My Own Advisor.
Diversification remains the only free lunch with investing – Modern Portfolio Theory.  This theory recognizes we humans are generally risk-averse and ready to run from any bear in the woods instead of running towards it.   According to this theory, one that is generally embraced by most financial academics and personal finance gurus, we can enhance portfolio returns while suppressing volatility through diversification.  Diversification then, via different assets classes (bonds, stocks), via different economic sectors (banking, consumer goods), via different countries other than your own (U.S., England, Brazil) is therefore a very good thing.
Recently, I shared my top Canadian dividend Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) to consider for your portfolio.  These ETFs are ones that I feel, will provide a steady income stream for you while providing some essential diversification within the Canadian equity market.
Today’s post will look at some of my favourite U…
