Google stock crosses $1,000 mark on strength of earnings report
– canadianbusiness.com
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Strong third-quarter results have sent Google shares past the $1,000 mark for the first time.
Shortly after the markets opened Friday, Google Inc. shares jumped more than 12 per cent to $1,002. The stock had never before surpassed $928 in regular market trading since Google went public at $85 per share nine years ago.
Late Thursday, Google reported better-than-expected third-quarter results. The numbers showed that while the company’s advertising prices continue to decline, that’s being offset by a larger number of people clicking on ads.
Google shares have climbed steadily for much of the past five years, more than doubling in value. But the stock has slipped slightly in recent months, while the overall market has risen, amid worries about deteriorating ad prices.

Swiss private bank Frey closes, citing burdensome regulation after US tax row
– canadianbusiness.com
GENEVA – A Swiss private bank says it is closing down because of what it calls costly and burdensome rules it needs to follow in the wake of a tax evasion row between Switzerland and the United States.
Bank Frey & Co. AG said its shareholders voted late Thursday to shutter the bank even though it is “financially healthy.”
The exclusive bank is one of 14 Swiss institutions under investigation by U.S. authorities over possible tax evasion by their American clients.
Washington and Bern reached a deal in August that would require Swiss banks to disclose information on U.S. clients and assets. Some would also have to pay a penalty.
Frey had links to Switzerland’s oldest private bank, Wegelin & Co., which closed at the start of the year after coming under U.S. pressure.

Ex-Spanish ruling party treasurer says he handed slush fund payments personally to top member
– canadianbusiness.com
MADRID – The jailed former financial chief of the ruling Popular Party says he personally handed thousands of euros to the party’s current secretary general as part of an off-the-books payment scheme he acknowledges he ran.
Speaking by video from prison Friday, Luis Barcenas told a Toledo court that he handed two envelopes containing 7,500 euros ($10,000) each in cash to Maria Cospedal in 2008.
Cospedal denied before the court that she received the payments. She is suing Barcenas for defamation.
Barcenas says the slush fund payments were a party tradition but Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has denied this vehemently.
Barcenas was jailed in June after he was found to have held millions of euros in secret Swiss bank accounts.
