LONDON – More “headline-grabbing” acquisitions are likely over the coming year as businesses take advantage of a period of improving economic growth and cheap financing.
That’s the conclusion of a survey by business consulting firm EY, which says the value of takeover deals announced in the first half of 2014 struck its highest level since the end of the boom years in 2007.
In its half-yearly update of corporate activity, EY said Thursday that the value of deals rose by 50 per cent from the same period the year before to $1.7 trillion. Not since the global financial crisis first erupted, prompting companies to batten down the hatches, has the value of deals been that high.
For years, big mergers and acquisitions have been notable for their absence as companies stocked up on cash reserves to weather the global economic storms. Pursuing M&A was very much a secondary consideration for boards round the world.
The latest EY figures confirm change is afoot. From the planned $67 billion tie-up between Comcast and Time Warner, and AT&T’s $67 billion deal with DirecTV to Valeant Pharmaceuticals’ $55 billion hostile approach for botox maker Allergan, the last few months have seen a flurry of high-value corporate activity…

NEW ORLEANS – A restaurant that for decades was a fixture of the New Orleans culinary scene is back — at least in name.
A bankruptcy judge overseeing the liquidation of Brennan’s Inc. on Wednesday approved the sale of the former restaurant’s trade name and other assets — including recipes. The buyer is an investment group that includes prominent New Orleans restaurateur Ralph Brennan. Brennan is related to the former Brennan’s operators, but previously had no role in the Royal Street restaurant.
The New Orleans Advocate reports (http://bit.ly/1ok7ln5) that Judge Jerry A. Brown accepted a $3 million offer for the assets from 417 Royal Street LLC, the same group that purchased the Brennan’s pink Royal Street building at a foreclosure auction last year.

MONTREAL – MTY Food Group Inc. (TSX:MTY) has reported a double-digit year-over-year increase in second-quarter earnings.
The Montreal-based fast food restaurant franchisor and operator says net income attributable to owners in the three months ended May 31 was $7.3 million or 38 cents per share, an amount it described as a “historical high” and a 16 per cent increase over the same period in 2013.
Revenue totalled $29.4 million, up from $25.3 million in the year-earlier period.
System sales increased by 25 per cent to $219 million in the quarter, although same-store sales were down two per cent, hurt by what it said was sluggish consumer spending and by intense competitive pressures.
MTY, whose restaurants include Mr. Sub, Cultures, Thai Express and Yogen Fruz among others, operated 2,585 stores at the end of the second quarter.
Shares in MTY, which reported its results after markets closed, were up 79 cents or 2.59 per cent at $31.28 on Wednesday.
