OSC orders $1 million in penalties for 2 men at centre of alleged fraud ring
– canadianbusiness.com
TORONTO – Two Canadian men at the centre of an alleged international penny stock fraud have been ordered by a provincial tribunal to pay more than $1 million in penalties for breaking Ontario securities law.
The Ontario Securities Commission also said Sandy Winick and Gregory Curry are permanently banned from securities trading, being an investment dealer, fund manager, director or corporate officer of any company.
The sanctions are related to three separate schemes involving securities of BFM Industries Inc., Liquid Gold International Corp. and Nanotech Industries Inc.
OSC commissioner James Carnwath ruled in a 14-page decision released Tuesday that Winick committed “a series of acts including the illegal distribution and unregistered trading of securities.

BILOXI, Miss. – The owners of Margaritaville Casino in Biloxi will build a new hotel next spring with an eye toward a 2015 opening.
Doug Shipley, Margaritaville’s president/CEO, said in a news release Tuesday that the new hotel will feature 250 rooms including 170 deluxe guest rooms and 80 two- and three-bedroom suites. He said the casino will offer some time-share units.
“Margaritaville Biloxi will be making a considerable investment in creating a resort destination the likes of which Biloxi has never seen.
“The addition of time-shares to our hotel will attract a whole new type of customer; one that’s not currently visiting the Biloxi area. It truly is an exciting opportunity for our city,” Shipley said.
In addition to the hotel, Shipley said Margaritaville will expand and renovate the casino floor, adding meeting space and a resort-style pool and spa. He said the casino will open a new steakhouse.

Fed stimulus, Washington gridlock were among the drivers of big stock market swings in 2013
– canadianbusiness.com
There were plenty of big moves on the stock market in 2013, and the causes of many of them could be traced back to Washington.
Investors dumped stocks when political gridlock brought the country perilously close to defaulting on its debt. They also fretted when Congress shut down the government rather than pass a budget. Likewise, markets shot higher when the dysfunction appeared to pass.
The Federal Reserve was also top of mind for Wall Street in 2013. The U.S. central bank’s aggressive bond-buying program has pumped money into financial markets and kept long-term interest rates extremely low.
Trying to guess when the Fed would start winding down its $85 billion a month in bond purchases became the biggest parlour game of the year on Wall Street. In mid-December, the Fed finally gave its answer: Citing an improving economy, Fed officials said they would start to reduce the purchases in early 2014.
Here are some of the biggest gains and drops of the year in the Dow Jones industrial average, and what caused them…
