WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The commercial bank BB&T will renew its push into mid-Atlantic states with a roughly $1.8 billion acquisition of National Penn, which runs branches in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland.
BB&T said it will pay either $13 in cash or a portion of its stock for each National Penn share. That represents a 19 per cent premium to the $10.92 closing price of National Penn shares on Monday.
Winston-Salem, North Carolina-based BB&T announced the acquisition late Monday, a couple of weeks after it closed its purchase of Susquehanna Bancshares Inc., a deal valued at about $2.5 billion.
Shares of BB&T Corp. fell 26 cents to $39.93 Tuesday morning while broader indexes also slipped. Meanwhile, shares of Allentown, Pennsylvania-based National Penn Bancshares Inc. jumped more than 16 per cent, or $1.82, to $12.74.

TORONTO – The Toronto Stock Exchange was down Tuesday morning amid concern about the strength of China’s economy.
The S&P/TSX composite index was down 34.96 points at 14,216.55, an improvement from a triple-digit drop earlier in the morning that followed a major decline in China’s Shanghai stock market.
The Dow Jones industrial average up 3.54 points at 17,548.72, the Nasdaq index fell 9.64 points to 5,082.06, and the S&P 500 declined 1.33 points to 2,101.11 — all up from their early lows.
Earlier, the Shanghai market in China dropped more than six per cent and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 1.43 per cent on Tuesday, raising concerns about the strength of the world’s second-largest economy.
Canada’s dollar traded at 76.49 cents US, up 0.07 of a U.S. cent from Monday’s close. The loonie had also been down earlier.
On the commodity markets, the December gold contract fell $4.10 to US$1,114.30 an ounce, the September crude contract was up 24 cents at US$42…
