Humana is pulling out of a major health care conference and says it will not comment on rumours of a merger, actions that will likely fuel Wall Street speculation that the insurer is part of a developing deal.
Shares of the Medicare Advantage coverage provider, which hit an all-time high late last month, climbed another 2 per cent Monday while broader indexes slipped.
Humana said that it has received analyst and investor questions about its outlook and the possibility that it will “participate in industry consolidation.” The insurer said that as part of a long-standing policy it won’t comment on speculation and that it will observe a quiet period that lasts until it announces second-quarter results July 29.
Humana Chief Financial Officer Brian Kane was scheduled to speak Wednesday at a Goldman Sachs global HealthCare conference in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. Kane is a former Goldman, Sachs executive who joined Humana last year.
Several other major figures in the industry, including the CEOs of Humana rivals Aetna Inc…

WASHINGTON – The U.S. economy is churning out a lot of jobs these days but not a lot of financial security for many of the people who hold them.
Pay growth, though improving, remains tepid. Many workers have few opportunities to advance. Others have taken temporary, part-time or freelance jobs, with little chance of landing full-time permanent work with benefits.
As a result, many jobs don’t deliver as much economic punch as they used to. Part of the reason is that U.S. workers have grown less efficient in recent months. When they produce less per hour of work, their earnings power shrinks. So the economy doesn’t fully benefit from the fuel that healthy job growth normally provides.
The result is a disconnect between the high number of job gains and a nagging dissatisfaction among some, both job holders and job seekers.
Lena Allison lost her job as a private-school kindergarten teacher in layoffs in September. Allison, 54, of Los Angeles has since worked temp jobs and struggled to find permanent work…

What happens to your child’s RESP if you die?(Nash Photos/Getty Images)
RESPs continue to be a popular way to save for a child’s or grandchild’s education. But what happens when the RESP subscriber – the person who creates and contributes to an RESP – dies before the RESP is fully paid out?
Let’s look at some planning options.
THE PROBLEM
An RESP is not a trust. It is a contractual arrangement between a subscriber and a promoter (usually a financial institution). If there is no surviving joint subscriber, an RESP contract becomes part of the estate of a deceased subscriber and, if proper planning is not in place, the contract’s value belongs to the residuary beneficiaries of the estate (for more on this, see “Quebec laws are different,” below).
Residuary estate beneficiaries usually want their inheritance maximized. So, after the RESP subscriber dies, the executor will likely collapse the RESP and distribute RESP contributions to those beneficiaries. If the conditions for an Accumulated Income Payment (AIP) are met, beneficiaries can also get the after-tax investment growth from the contributions and from Canada Education Savings Grants (CESGs)…

NEW YORK, N.Y. – American Pharoah’s owners and thoroughbred racing now have a new race to run: A race to capitalize on the horse’s Triple Crown victory before the excitement fades away.
As the first winner of the sport’s Triple Crown in 37 years, American Pharoah has a wealth of marketing opportunities that could never have been imagined by owners of the last winner, Affirmed, in 1978. At the same time, horse racing has declined into a niche pastime that is facing an aging demographic, a shrinking number of race tracks, and competition from new ways of betting on sports.
“Marketing has changed, media has changed, and how people consume the product has changed,” says David Carter, a sports business professor at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. “It’s one thing to drive notoriety, but it’s another thing to get people to part with their money.”
American Pharoah’s owner, Ahmed Zayat, has already struck sponsorship deals with Monster energy drinks and a private-airplane membership company called Wheels Up…
