ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Seattle’s mayor and environmentalists have vowed to block Royal Dutch Shell PLC from parking two Arctic offshore drilling rigs on Seattle’s waterfront, an effort to thwart the new frontier in oil exploration and spark a national debate about fossil fuels and climate change.
WHAT’S AT STAKE?
The U.S. Geological Survey estimates Arctic offshore reserves at 26 billion barrels of recoverable oil and 130 trillion cubic feet of natural gas.
Shell is now approaching $7 billion in Arctic offshore investment, and plans to drill up to four exploratory wells over two years in the Chukchi Sea to determine whether there are commercial quantities of oil and gas.
Shell officials say offshore Alaska offers some of the most prolific, undeveloped hydrocarbon basins in the world. They call it a “potential game-changer” that could increase domestic supply by over 1 million new barrels of oil per day.
WHY IS SHELL PARKING EQUIPMENT IN SEATTLE?
Shell stored equipment in Seattle for the 2012 drilling season and wants to again use its deep-water port, loading space and workforce to load drilling rigs and the accompanying fleet with supplies and personnel…

SWAN VALLEY, Man. – Changes are coming to a mill in Swan Valley, Man., and it means a big investment and more jobs.
The Louisiana-Pacific Corp., based in Nashville, is investing $95 million on the project.
It will convert the strand board facility in Swan Valley into a mill that will produce panel and lap siding for use in homes, businesses and industrial facilities.
It’s the company’s first siding mill in Canada and will add about 40 jobs to the existing 160 member workforce at the operation.
The changeover will start this summer and is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Plant manager Kevin Betcher says the decision is “a testament to the people who work here,” noting staff have more than 19 years of experience in manufacturing OSB from a safety, quality, environmental and manufacturing perspective.

The following article by Jessica McDiarmid first appeared on Canadian Business:
There’s a joke venture capitalist Kerri Golden sometimes tells audiences when she gives lectures: The good thing about working in a male-dominated industry is that during conferences or events, there’s no lineup for the women’s bathroom. “The bad news,” she says, “is all the deals are happening in the men’s room.”
Golden has a long history in venture capital. She’s currently the co-founder and general partner at JOLT, a micro-seed fund and technology accelerator in Toronto, and serves as chief financial officer for Information Venture Partners, an offshoot of RBC Venture Partners. Throughout her career, she’s never had to identify herself on a conference call. “I’m the only female voice they’ll hear,” Golden says. “It’s been that way since I started, and there hasn’t been a significant improvement…
