TORONTO – Iamgold Corp. (TSX:IMG) has reported a US$16-million net loss and $8.8 million in adjusted earnings for the second quarter.
The adjusted earnings, reported in U.S. currency, amounted to two cents per share, a penny below analyst estimates.
The adjusted profit was also down from eight cents per share or $30.2 million a year earlier.
Iamgold’s net loss under standard accounting was improved compared with the second quarter of 2013, when it lost $28.4 million or eight cents per share. The company said it benefited from a number of factors including reduced impairment on its marketable securities, lower income taxes, lower expenses and a smaller writedown of receivables.
The Toronto-based company’s revenue dropped to $288.6 million from $301.1 million as both sales volume and average realized price for gold fell from a year earlier.
Iamgold sold 192,000 ounces in the three months ended June 30, down from 201,000 ounces in the second quarter of 2013. The average realized price was US$1,288 per ounce, down from $1,373…

How to manage multiple investment accountsModel portfolios like those I recommend are ideal for investors who have a single RRSP account. But life isn’t so simple once you’ve accumulated a significant portfolio: chances are you’ll be managing two or three accounts, and if you have a spouse there may well be a few more.
In most cases, it’s most efficient to consider both partners’ retirement accounts as a single large portfolio. In other words, there’s no my money and my spouse’s money: there’s only our money. This strategy has a couple of advantages: first, it allows the family to make the most tax-efficient asset location decisions. Second, it keeps the overall number of holdings to a minimum, which reduces transaction costs and complexity.
Meet Henry and Anne, who have a combined portfolio of $480,000. Let’s assume they are the same age and plan to retire at about the same time. Their financial plan revealed that a mix of 50% bonds and 50% stocks is suitable for their risk tolerance and goals. Anne has a generous defined-benefit pension plan and therefore has little RRSP room: most of her personal savings go to a non-registered account…

MONTREAL – Travel rewards company Aimia Inc. (TSX:AIM) has reported a sharp reduction in its net loss in the second quarter but a big drop in adjusted earnings as a result of prior changes in its so-called “breakage” estimates which factor in future redemption costs.
The Montreal-based operator of the Aeroplan travel rewards program says the net loss was $18.8 million or 14 cents per share in the quarter, compared with a net loss of $415.2 million or $2.43 per share in the same 2013 period.
Total revenue, also adjusted for breakage, was $555.4 million, compared with minus $123.3 million in the year-earlier period, while gross billings rose to $648.1 million from $570.6 million.
Adjusted earnings per share were 17 cents, down from 53 cents in the 2013 period.
Breakage refers to estimates of the percentage of people who acquire rewards but fail to cash them in, thereby lowering the overall cost of the program.
In the second quarter of 2013, total revenue included the non-comparable impact of the change in breakage estimate in the Aeroplan program which resulted in a reduction to revenue from loyalty units of $642…

DARTMOUTH, N.S. – Newfoundland Capital Corp. Ltd. (TSX:NCC.A) has reported a 26 per cent increase in second-quarter net profit as the radio station operator realized an almost 20 per cent boost in revenue as a result station acquisitions in Toronto and Vancouver.
The Nova Scotia-based company, which has 95 radio licences across the country, says net earnings were $7.5 million or 26 cents per diluted share, up from just under $6 million or 20 cents per diluted share in the comparable 2013 period.
Revenue in the three months ended June 30 was $42.3 million, up from $35.4 million in the prior-year period.
The company said most of the $1.6-million increase in profit was as a result of the acquisition as well as $800,000 in realized gains from the sale of securities.
“The integration of the Toronto and Vancouver stations went as expected and has generated accretive results from day one,” president and chief executive Rob Steele said Wednesday in a statement accompanying the earnings report…
