MOSCOW – Russia’s Central Bank on Monday scrapped its daily controls on the value of the ruble, allowing the battered currency to float freely in financial markets earlier than planned.
The bank, which had planned to let the ruble trade freely starting next year, made the move as the currency has come under sustained pressure in the face of Western sanctions over Ukraine and plummeting oil prices. The ruble has lost nearly half its value against the dollar this year.
The bank said, effective Monday, it will stop setting daily limits for the ruble’s fluctuations and will not have any obligation to intervene in financial markets to support the currency. To prevent a sharper drop in the ruble, however, the bank said it will be ready to intervene if necessary to fend off “threats to financial stability.”
Central Bank Chief Elvira Nabiullina said in televised remarks that the regulator will “intervene in the market at any moment in the amount necessary to counter speculative demand…

TORONTO – In 2012, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook shrewdly signed a US$1 billion deal to acquire the booming free photo sharing app Instagram.
Now, after doubling Instagram’s user base to more than 200 million and quadrupling the number of shared photos to 20 billion, Zuckerberg is trying to recoup that investment.
About a year after launching in-stream Instagram advertisements in the U.S., and months after doing the same in the U.K. and Australia, the company began rolling out the first ads to Canadian users on Monday.
“Because we’ve always had big ideas for the future for Instagram part of making that happen is ensuring that Instagram becomes a sustainable business,” says Facebook creative strategist Helen Pak, who helped co-ordinate the ad launch in Canada.
It kicks off with promoted posts from just six companies, Air Canada, Hudson’s Bay, Mercedes-Benz, Sport Chek, Target and Travel Alberta.
Pak hopes Instagram users won’t be startled by the ads and will barely notice them tucked between the stylized selfies and other photos and videos in their streams…

Why so many bosses are badImage Source/Getty Images
For a long time, one of Canada’s largest residential landlords, Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust (CAPREIT), admittedly did better at managing its properties than its staff did. Its workers were disengaged and unhappy, and their managers were not providing the right sort of feedback. “People didn’t feel they were being recognized for their efforts, they didn’t feel any sense of accomplishment, and the work they did was kind of just seen as, ‘Oh, that’s your work,’ ” says Jodi Lieberman, vice-president of human resources.
But CAPREIT, which owns more than 40,000 apartments across Canada, has turned its management team around, mentoring its bosses, boosting job satisfaction and winning it a place on Aon Hewitt’s list of Canada’s 50 best employers.
Lieberman, a veteran executive with more than 10 years experience running human resource departments at large organizations, joined CAPREIT in 2009, when morale was at its lowest…

LISBON, Portugal – A battle has started for control of Portugal Telecom, with an Angolan takeover bid countering a French company’s offer.
The Lisbon stock exchange on Monday suspended trading in shares of Portugal Telecom SGPS SA after a 1.2 billion euro ($1.5 billion) bid from Terra Peregrin, a Lisbon-based company wholly owned by Isabel dos Santos, a businesswoman and daughter of longtime Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos.
PT is owned by Brazilian operator Oi, which is considering a 7 billion euro debt-free bid for PT made last week by France’s Altice. Oi described Terra Peregrin’s bid as “inopportune.”
PT’s share price has plunged around 60 per cent in recent months after the company revealed it lent around 900 million euros to a Portuguese company that went bankrupt.
